Ralkina Jones

Just a day after Sandra Bland’s family laid the 28-year-old woman to rest after she was found unresponsive in the Waller County Jail in Texas, another Black woman has died in police custody.

According to law enforcement officials in Cleveland, Ohio, Ralkina Jones died Sunday morning at the Cleveland Heights Jail. Jones’ family said she was arrested on Friday after getting into an argument with her husband at his workplace, and two days later she was found dead in her cell.

The exact cause of Jones’ death is unknown, but the coroner’s office said her death doesn’t appear suspicious at this time. However, the medical examiner will conduct an autopsy of her body this week and the investigation is ongoing.

Sara Goldenberg, a reporter with 19 Action News in Cleveland, spoke to Jones’ family who indicated the 37-year-old had medical issues and they took her medication while she was incarcerated. The family also said they have yet to hear from police about Jones’ death, and they “just want answers.”

Cleveland Heights police officials say they will issue a statement about Jones’ death shortly, and we will continue to update this story when more information becomes available.

My heartaches reading these stories. Three women have died in police custody within two weeks.

  • This is totally sad. The truth should be known and Ralkina Jones’ life should remind us about what is really important. What’s important is not the distractions or the materialism found in society. What is really important is human compassion, altruism, and standing up for the positive building in our communities. I send prayers and condolences to the family of Sister Ralkina Jones. RIP Sister.
