Courtney Best is by all means a hero, and interestingly enough it all has to do with her cigarette smoking habit. Best, who works at a pizza shop in Corpus Christi, Texas, decided to take a cigarette break in the front of the store, instead of the back on June 26.

Choosing to take her break in the front, saved a child’s life. Best previously received an Amber Alert on her phone and was shocked at what she was watching.

“I stepped outside, I was standing by the trash can and I seen a white car pull up and I just happen to take my phone with me cause we don’t look at our phones at work, and I looked down and I saw ‘white Dodge Avenger amber alert’, and I was like, nah, that’s not him,” said Courtney. “The man was walking across the parking lot looking at me … cause I was the only person out here, with the little boy and the little boy looked scared and I was like no, that’s not him.”

When she realized it was the kidnapper, she knew she had to do something.

“My stomach started knotting up, so I was like, ahh, I’m gonna go, I’m gonna check and see,” Courtney said.

She hopped into her own car and discretely drove by the suspect’s vehicle to check the license plates. Sure enough, they were a match.

She called 911 but, by this time, the suspect was back in the car and about to drive off.

“And I’m on the phone with 911 and I tell her, look, the plates match up, he’s turning left on Staples but I’m gonna follow him.”

Soon after Best followed the kidnapper, the cops arrived and arrested Channing Galbraith. The kidnapped boy, 7-year old Nicholas Gomez, is safe.

And it’s all thanks to an alert woman with incredible timing.

“That’s why I’m freakin’ out,” said Best. “Cause, what are the odds? What are the odds of me looking at my phone? And I usually don’t even look at amber alerts, as bad as that sounds, I look at them and I don’t really pay attention. And I was like, he couldn’t get from Alice in that little bit of time. Sure enough it was him.”
