BET is going through some things, y’all. Next year, Being Mary Jane showrunner Mara Brock Akil will be taking her talents to Warner Brothers, and last week BET announced it was bringing back its controversial video show Uncut. As many wonder what Debra Lee and co. are up to, the network said it will be rolling out a three-part miniseries on New Edition.
According to a press release, NE members Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant will serve as producers on the biopic alongside the group’s longtime manager Brooke Payne. Bobby Brown wasn’t listed among the show’s creators, but given New Edition’s rocky history with the Prerogative singer, I wouldn’t expect anything different.
The untitled project will take a look at how the group rose from the Orchard Park Projects in Boston to become one of the biggest acts in the ’80s and ’90s. Although there’s no director attached to the film just yet, shooting is scheduled to begin in 2016.
