Thursday night, Republican candidates squared off in the first presidential debate of the 2016 race, and boy was it interesting to watch.

The night began with Donald Trump and moderator Megyn Kelly butting heads over his disparaging comments on women. Kelly, a popular Fox News host, pressed Trump on his offensive remarks.

“You’ve called women you don’t like fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals,” she told Trump. The former Apprentice host tried to dodge her criticism by joking he’s only used his vicious words on Rossie O’Donnell.

The skirmishes continued later in the evening when Kentucky Senator Rand Paul and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie got into a heated exchange over the NSA’s bulk collection of phone records, with Christie calling Paul “full of hot air.”

While there was a lot of conversation about immigration reform, Hillary Clinton, and President Obama’s policies, race garnered exactly one question. And of course, Fox moderators asked the Black guy, Dr. Ben Carson, to weigh in.

During the debate, Carson called moderators out on being ignored, and indeed there was a long stretch between his first and second questions. Carson, who’s a world-renowned neurosurgeon, seemed out of place when talking about his lack of foreign policy experience, and when asked about his tax plan the doctor said he’d rely on the biblical principle of tithing.

Before the night ended, Kelly asked Carson–the only Black candidate in the race so far–about the current state of race relations and how he would heal the divide.

Carson’s answer? It’s time to move on.

“We have the purveyors of hatred who take every single incident between people of two races and try to make a race war out of it,” he said. Carson went on to explain that as a neurosurgeon race doesn’t matter.

“The skin doesn’t make [people] who they are. The hair doesn’t make them who they are. And it’s time for us to move beyond that,” he explained. “Our strength comes from our unity. We are the United States of America, not the divided states, and those who want to destroy us are trying to divide us, and we shouldn’t let them do it.”

Despite Carson’s assertion that race doesn’t matter, one look at the events of the past year tells us otherwise.

In addition to the extrajudicial killings of unarmed Black folks, research has shown that people of color are treated differently when looking for jobs, in the justice system, and even by their teachers. Moreover, Fox News, a network Carson loves to appear on, continues to be one of the most divisive and offensive when it comes reporting on people who do not fit a particular race, religion, or political views.

If race doesn’t matter why did Kelly ask the lone African American man on the stage how he’d “heal” the racial divide instead of posing the question to Donald Trump or Rand Paul or Chris Christie or Marco Rubio?

I think we all know the reason.

    • Ann Gomez

Your what’s wrong with black folk today, why are you calling a smart man a clown. He has done more good then you have every accomplished so hush!

You rather support a baby killing swindler then a wise black man, smh you fool…

    • mywordsaremypower

Some Black men are good. Some Black men are not good.

    • you are right, and some black me who think they are smart are dumb and that’s why they get no respect from their women because they are too dumb to promote the interest of and take care of themselves and kind FIRST!

    • Great Point.

    • they do that simply because white liberals tells them to do that, they have been trained not to think about and promote their best interest and agenda “first” they have been trained and taught to think about and promote what’s good for everybody [even their fearless competitors and those who have had light years of advance on their kind] to the detriment of their own interest and what best for their kind first, they really don’t understand how this competitive world we live in works thus the reason why we are always looking up from the bottom.

Its like did she even listen to Ben during the debate! He’s whole argument was to educate people and he had good policy’s that were based on fairness. I feel like we need a president who will educate individuals like these fools.

    • but they want listen to anyone else unless they are a democrat or someone who is telling them how much of a victim they are and they would be better off depending on someone else other than themselves, right now those are the only one they will listen to.

    • Ann Gomez

Well then they need read up on Jonestown. Jim jones would tell black folk they were victims all the time and we all know what happened to them.

  • If Ben Carson was asked about race, then the other candidates should have been asked about race too. That would be fair. Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution (since the GOP loves to brag about loving the Constitution so much) says that Congress has the legal right to levy and collect taxes, provide the general welfare, advance commerce, coin money, etc. Therefore, Congress should pass a jobs bill and an infrastructure bill (which has been stymied by reactionaries in Congress who have executed obstructionism) to create jobs and improve America in general. We need urban and rural reconstruction (as the policies during the post War economic boom from 1945 and 1973 caused the greatest reduction of economic inequality in American history).

We can never be a more united country unless economic and racial oppression are fought against directly. We have to condemn the system of white supremacy outright. We have a corrupt judicial system. That is why people are promoting the Safe Justice Act as a way for individuals to confront the unfair sentencing disparities in America (and it can cut the prison population in half). Structural discrimination must be combated. We can never come into the Promised land by ignoring racism. Also, Trump’s sexism is abhorrent. His comments about women in the past and in the present are reprehensible. We have to fight evil in order to live in a better society. People have the right to agree or disagree with Ben Carson. Ben Carson is a very talented neurosurgeon. There is nothing wrong with ideological diversity in America. Also, there is nothing wrong with black people standing up against police brutality, wanting a better environment, and promoting the issues that black people care about.

Be careful everyone, this was weird: It was either this article or the butt injection one I just clicked, then got a pop up warning scam that I had malware that asked me to call 888-479-6340. It looks legit and calls itself Windows (if you use windows defender it’s almost believable) but is a scam from India. I looked up the number and they clearly are not legit.
