According to the Pew Research Center the number of Americans who identify as atheists is higher than ever. While people who are “religiously unaffiliated” has been rising for years, the number of people who don’t believe in God–now around 3.1-percent–signals a shift in American society.
The Pew Research Center found the overwhelming majority of atheists tend to be young, male, white, and politically liberal, and about two-thirds say “they look primarily to science for guidance on questions of right and wrong.”
While atheism is on the rise in the U.S., America is still one of the most religious industrialized nations in the world with 63 percent of people saying they are “absolutely certain” God exists, 77 percent identifying with some religious faith, and 89 percent of people admitting they believe in God.
When it comes to religion, how do you identify?
