Farrell, Pennsylvania’s Police Chief Thomas Burke is under fire after emails were released with him addressing black people with the n-word.

Just weeks before his Monday swearing-in, Burke sent out an email blast about a book fundraiser.

“GOOD MORNING… PLEASE CLICK AND REVIEW… EVEN ONE -DOLLAR WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED… THEM SHARON *EXPLETIVE* GOTTA LEARN HOW TO READ.”

City of Farrell Councilwoman Stephanie Sheffield expressed disappointment in the letter.

“I was very hurt and upset,” Councilwoman Sheffield says. “I think it was a very negative response for our area here in Sharon and Farrell.”

More than 12 people received the email, which consisted of friends and colleagues.

Sheffeld called for his dismal and spoke about Burke’s response.

“I spoke with him this morning, and I immediately said dismissal,” Councilwoman Sheffield added.

“[Burke] came and knocked on my door this morning with an apology letter and how he is very familiar with our community and our area. [Burke said] he does use the ‘N’ Word very often because that’s the way it is in our area. [I don’t think] he should stand in that position if he’s going to use the ‘N’ Word.”

But the town’s black mayor feels differently.

Farrell Mayor Olive McKeithan, who is black, stood up for Burke’s character.

“Until you get to know a man’s character, you can’t judge him by one off-the-cuff remark, or else we would have to judge all white people as equally guilty,” McKeithan remarked to WKBN. “I have spoken with Mr. Burke and consider the matter as closed.”

Burke has apologized and apparently all is forgiven.
