Our favorite rude gal covers the latest issue of Vogue, and it’s one of the best interviews we’ve read with Robyn Rihanna Fenty in a while. While the singer is notorious selective about chatting with the media, she opens up to Abby Aguirre about everything from her boredom with her old sound to her supposed rivalry with with Beyoncé.
Before Rihanna’s latest album Anti hit airwaves, the Bajan singer released a string of hit records every single year. But as the time grew between her last project, Unapologetic, and Anti, her fans began to grow impatient. But Rihanna wasn’t in a rush to pump out yet another pop album full of radio friendly hits for one big reason: she was bored.
“I wanted to have a year to just do whatever I want artistically, creatively,” she said of her extended break.
It paid off. Anti’s genre-bending sound is full of experimental soulful tracks that aren’t automatic fits for the radio.
“I just gravitated toward the songs that were honest to where I’m at right now,” he explained. “It might not be some automatic record that will be Top 40. But I felt like I earned the right to do that now.”
Where Rihanna is right now is handling her business. Between her successful Puma collection, which boosted the company’s sales, to her $25 million Samsung deal, and her decision to buy back her masters from Def Jam and start her own music imprint, Rihanna has quietly been amassing an empire worth an estimated $160 million.
While Rihanna’s at the top of the music game, there’s one woman she’s constantly compared to: Beyoncé.
Though the pair have always kept it cute and cordial publicly, the BeyHive and the Navy love to mix it up about which pop diva is the best. Rihanna isn’t phased about the debate, however, insisting all she can do is be herself.
“Here’s the deal,” she told Vogue. “They just get so excited to feast on something that’s negative. Something that’s competitive. Something that’s, you know, a rivalry. And that’s just not what I wake up to. Because I can only do me. And nobody else is going to be able to do that.”
Really, who else could possibly be able to out Rihanna Rihanna?
Not a damn soul.
