Tuesday night, BET aired the amazingly dope and inspiring Black Girls Rock award show. The night not only featured awesome performances by Jazmine Sullivan, Monica, Brandy, Andra Day, and Gladys Knight, but also honored Black women and girls like Rihanna, Shonda Rhimes, Danai Gurira, Amandla Stenberg, and Black Lives Matter’s Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. While the evening was nothing short of magical, there was one moment that some folks just weren’t feeling.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has been trying to win the nomination by appealing to Black voters, and Tuesday night, she even showed up on the Black Girls Rock stage.

“The entire world knows what you know, and that is, Black girls rock,” Clinton told the supportive crowd. “Black women are change makers and path makers and ground shakers. My life has been changed by strong black women leaders, from Marian Wright Edelman to Dorothy Height to Maya Angelou.”

Clinton also discussed the challenges Black women face, something she’s also discussed on the campaign trail.

“There are still a lot of barriers holding back African Americans and Black women in particular, so a gathering like this filled with so many powerful, strong women is a rebuke to every single one of those barriers,” she said. “All of our kids, no matter what zip code they live in, deserve a good teacher and a good school, a safe community and clean water to drink.”

While the folks inside the theater gave the former Secretary of State a standing ovation, the reaction over on Black Twitter was decidedly different.

Did you watch this year’s Black Girl’s Rock show? What did you think of Clinton’s appearance?
