Last week, 16-year-old Dayshen McKenzie died from an asthma attack after being chased around Staten Island, NY by an angry mob of racists shouting racial slurs. But now the NYPD has ruled that his death was not a hate crime.
According to the Associated Press, Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce says the incident was gang related. Former NYPD Police Officer Diane Fatigati says she saw the white and hispanic group of men chasing the teen and they were calling him the n-word.
Boyce says the group of teens and men came together for a pre-planned fight.
“It has been determined preliminarily, that McKenzie died as a result of a pre-existing medical condition,” Boyce said, according to AP. “There is no evidence, nor do we have any witnesses, indicating that it was (an) assault.”
Boyce also said in initial interviews with Fatigati and other witnesses, “no one reported any racial- or biased-related comments.”
