Three-time Olympic doubles gold medalist sisters Venus and Serena Williams lost in straight sets to the Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova.
It’s their first Olympic loss together, having won gold as a pair at the Sydney 2000 Games, Beijing 2008 Games and London 2012 Games.
“I wouldn’t stay it’s devastating… we had a chance to compete for our country, we did the best that we can. We had a blast out there,” Serena told reporters after their loss.
“We’ve had so many Olympic doubles golds, so many grand slam championships. It’s been unbelievable.”
Both women have also won Olympic gold medals in singles play, with Venus triumphing in Sydney and then Serena becoming champion in London.
