Brock Turner, who received a slap on the wrist 3-month sentence after being found guilty of raping a woman, may have gotten off easy with the court system, but with his neighbors– not so much. Armed protesters have descended on the Turner family’s Sugar Creek, Ohio home carrying signs like, “castrate your local rapist” and “If I rape Brock Will I Only Do 3 Months.”

Screen Shot 2016-09-07 at 10.05.16 AMThe group of men and women are standing in an act of solidarity against the outrageous sentencing that Brock received that allowed him to walk out of jail only 3 months after he publicly raped the unconscious woman, a grand display of male privilege, race privilege and class privilege that all run rampant in society. It is no surprise that Brock’s neighbors were rightfully outraged and decided to take a stand. Debates about sexual violence and campus safety have engulfed the nation in discussion about rape culture. This case was the straw that broke the camel’s back, that both inspired a change of law to protect unconscious sexual assault victim and also forced many to confront the reality that a culture exists that sexually victimizes women and girls that must be addressed.

Brock Turner neighbors are most certainly addressing it head on with their protest.

He’s not going to live some happy pleasant life,” one protester told local media. “We’re going to never let him forget what he did.”

His victim will never forget and neither should we as a nation. Hopefully this case will force America to better protect women and girls from sexual violence.
