I went natural a year ago and I am totally loving my thick, naturally curly hair with little or no breakage problems. Every time I think that I want to go straight again, I think about how much thicker and healthier my hair is and I become more committed to keeping it that way. I also discovered that my natural hair naturally coils; that's after experiencing so much damage with curly perms and cold waves to give me the look that I was already born with. In one year, my natural hair has grown nearly to the shoulders and I cannot wait until I have a head full of big hair. Black women should be encouraged to grow their own hair without chemicals; the experience is so liberating and it will do wonders for your self esteem!

As many of my sisters out there, I too have been the product of overprocessed, chemically treated hair. Whenever I see others wearing their hair in its natural state, I feel a common kinship towards them. I am well aware of the negative remarks of family and friends who do not understand this “sudden change.” A “sudden change,” however, it is not. Our lives are made of profuse moments we are made to look solely at ourselves. I agree with Ms. Da Costa in that it is not for everyone to go the drastic route of just cutting off all your relaxed hair. As for me, it took my third attempt to find this was the only way that I was going to arrive to this particular destination. It would be similar to jumping in a cold pool of water, so to get over the shock.

I was tired of trying to “beat the clock” of slapping a relaxer on my hair before the wiry coils would appear. I had to ask myself, “What is it that I am hiding?” The answer was simple, “me.” I remember the common explanation I so often used, “It’s more manageable to have my hair straightened.” After years of using this excuse, I came to find out, “more manageable for my hair to move in the wind.” Ha! My hair was not designed to “move in the wind.” That is okay, if ever I want it to, I can just put a hot comb through it. But when I am through with this charade, I will soak it in water, and watch it curl and spiral and be at a standstill, and smile to know that I am fearfully and wonderfully made!

I absolutely love this site! It is a joy that we now have venues from which we can share! God bless! I will definitely be back!
