110207_newton_300x400.jpgA new take on the classic cat eye look made popular by 50s screen sirens is all the rage on the catwalk and runways. The old school look was created by drawing a thick wing of eyeliner from the inside corner to far beyond the outer corner. The updated look is much thinner and the line only extends to right below the edge of the brow.

Follow these simple tips to get the perfect winged eye look . . .

1. Look into a mirror straight on as you apply liner. Make sure you have plenty of light in the room.

2. Start with a pencil that you can draw a thin line with and then come back and trace with the liquid liner. A pencil is much easier to work with and easier to fix mistakes so it’s a good way to get a perfect line. But stop before you get to the wing because you want to do that with just the liquid liner. Try Estee Lauder’s Artist’s Eye Pencil in Softsmudge Black ($19, esteelauder.com).

3. Follow the pencil with a liquid liner making sure you get close to the lash line. Trace the line you made with the pencil and then at the end slowly wing it out to the point where the eyebrow ends. Nars Liquid Eyeliner in Angel Heart ($27.50, narscosmetics.com) is a good choice for this look.

4. To complete the look use a lengthening mascara for top and bottom lashes such as Estee Lauder Double Wear Zero Smudge Lengthening Mascara ($19.50, esteelauder.com).
