Natural Hair Nazis

Beware of the Natural Hair Nazis and Natural Hair Police

Throughout my natural hair journey I have had several run-ins with Natural Hair Nazis and/or Natural Hair Police. Not at all hard to spot, they are those who go ballistic, for lack of a better term, over the fact that one decides, or even considers wearing their hair anything but natural. Most often the opinions given by these Natural Hair Nazis and/or Natural Hair Police sound more like a scolding than advice. I have witnessed some who have come under their wrath turn away from natural hair community sites altogether and shut down Fotki and hair journals, due to their ‘advice’ or comments.

Sometimes I wonder if members of the Natural Hair Nazis and/or Natural Hair Police actually seek out natural hair forums, articles, blogs, picture journals etc. just so they can get the opportunity to share their negative views. They don’t hold back their over-the-top insults, given in the form of comments or advice, even when it comes to those new to the natural community or those just curious and seeking information. I also wonder if they are aware or even care if their ‘advice’ and the way in which they give it, actually turns people away versus welcoming them into the natural hair community.

The following are a few scenarios in which I’ve seen these Natural Hair Nazis and/or Natural Hair Police do their best work.

Scenario One: Someone on a hair board asks a question about periodic straightening with a flat iron or straightening comb while transitioning. Granted the natural hair community may be dedicated to naturals with hair that is unaltered, no heat, no chemicals etc., but it’s often obvious that the person asking the question is new. Instead of just giving the cons of heat, suggesting no heat transition styles, or even directing the questioner to another hair board, members of the Natural Hair Nazis and/or Natural Hair Police go off.

Scenario Two: Someone who has been natural for a while, decides to publish a picture of their freshly straightened flat ironed or blow dried hair. Even with the disclaimer that this is just temporary and the poster does this once a year, and does not recommend straightening, again the Natural Hair Nazis and/or Natural Hair Police don’t hesitate to let their disapproval known. It’s like they are drawn to the picture of the straightened hair with a fury and can’t simply click pass without commenting.

Scenario Three: Someone expresses that their flat ironed, permed, texturized hair was actually healthy and that they decided to go natural as a style option, and now has decided to end their natural journey. Even though the poster has pictures of their hair before they went natural showing thick, shiny hair with healthy ends and full edges, this sets off a firestorm of negative comments from the Natural Hair Nazis and/or Natural Hair Police.

I’ve even seen some horrible comments written under photos of natural hair wearers sporting straight wigs, or sew-in weaves worn for the purpose of transitioning and/or protective styles. What is the purpose of going to someone’s personal site, blog, hair journal or hair community and making such comments? Is the intention really to turn all those contemplating wearing natural hair away?

I’ve even seen some horrible comments written under photos of natural hair wearers sporting straight wigs, or sew-in weaves worn for the purpose of transitioning and/or protective styles. What is the purpose of going to someone’s personal site, blog, hair journal or hair community and making such comments? Is the intention really to turn all those contemplating wearing natural hair away? What happened to, “If you don’t have anything nice to say…?”

To members of the Natural Hair Nazis and/or Natural Hair Police, remember where you came from. Most of us have not been on this natural hair journey all of our lives. I decided to go natural three times, before making the choice to stay natural. Lots of us have had those moments when we considered straightening. Helpful comments can even plant a ‘natural’ seed in those who seem to be against natural hair – you never know. Words are powerful.

Also remember, that not only do those who are steadfast in wearing their hair straight ( by whatever means) read your comments, but also those who are interested in wearing their hair natural – let’s not turn them away. So before you make that comment think about what you are going to write – is it helpful or harmful to the reader? Will it classify you as a Natural Hair Nazi and/or Natural Hair Police?

And, to all those who are either interested in growing and wearing your natural, transitioning and newbies, when you come across such comments please ignore them; they do NOT represent the natural hair community as a whole. There are some great natural hair ambassadors full of wonderful advice.

There are also some great hair boards and natural hair communities where naturals, transitioners, texturized, permies and the like all socialize together. I’m even in a few challenges on a couple of these sites i.e. Keep It Simple Sista’s (keepitsimplesista.ning.com) Castor Oil and Hairlista’s (hairlista.ning.com) No More Shampoo challenges, where there are both permed and natural hair wearers participating.

    Lillia made a good point.

The truth of the matter is that Tracee Ellis Ross and Curly Q hair is the holy grail/measuring stick of what some sistas wish they could have in order to put the creamy crack down. Some sistas are really afraid to go there with the natural hair because it won’t come out looking like easy breezy tussled bed head. When your curl pattern is real tight…it takes a lot of confidence to rock it in its glory cause you will get stares. Don’t be dark skinned….everyone will think you’re sister Toldjah and down with the back to Africa movement.

Last week I had a brother actually tell me to my face that sistas with natural hair don’t care about material things or status. AKA we don’t mind having bottom of the barrel broke ass brothers with pocket lint for change as our better halves. My face was all “WTF?” I was insulted…and while at the end of the day you can’t take people’s opinions to heart sometimes perceptions about what is can get downright trying.

Hair is hair and good hair is healthy hair; but somewhere along the lines politics, history and beauty standards will arise in this conversation.

  2. BeauteNoire BeauteNoire says:

When I made the decision to go natural it wasn’t because I wanted to make some political statement or connect to my “roots”, so to speak. I wasn’t experiencing breakage of thinning of any kind. Quite the contrary.

I understand that a lot of natural women harbor some resentment because of the way they were treated when they first went natural. Having the people closest to you question your decision and make you feel like you’ve ruined your appearance can make you feel like people have an unhealthy obsession with straight hair. And some of us do. I just don’t see how passing on that negative energy is helping matters.

If you feel so strongly about natural hair, why not give some of the support you wished you’d received. As they say, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, so be a little sweeter the next time the discussion of natural hair comes up instead of going into attack mode.

  3. star13 star13 says:

Why go to a site like this and do something that is blantantly against the rules, and then get upset when people yell at you for it. If you don’t like the site, don’t go to it plain and simple

  4. Vixen Vixen says:

Star13 what if they don’t know the rules. I don’t know many that read the “rules” of a site. Honestly, Nappturality is the only site I know that has rules. Also, most newbies are looking for ANY information and just looking to have their questions answered. Going natural is not easy as many women here have stated but why be rude to new people that are there for help!

Why be mean and attacked them for no reason? I know that site (nappturality) is the mecca for women with natural hair and newbies are directed and attracted to the site and some of the sistas there are just mean for no reason. Most of the women here and on other sites were not naturals all of there lives — so why have a attitude to someone who is going through something u went through when u started your journey?

You can say what you want about women with perms. Natural women are too damn extra. And when people say they (naturals) go through a lot when going natural and get “side-eyed” on their hair. Here in Atlanta we LOVE women with natural hair and no body side eyes – we look cause we love their hair. Every woman I know that is natural is ALWAY praised for going natural. ESPECIALLY by women with perms! So please stop using that excuse.

  5. Cdubb Cdubb says:

@ star13- IA just read the rules (which are presented to you when you register and all over nappturality’s website…you can’t miss them ;-)).

Rules are meant to be read, if you don’t that’s on you. I don’t condone being mean or rude but if you do something against the rules you run the risk of getting a snarky comment from a “nappy (or nappturality) purist” (a term that is better than “nappy nazi”).

  6. LaKeyshaF LaKeyshaF says:

    Vixen-
I agree with you that there is no reason to be rude. But I also believe that the “excuse” that you dismiss is a legitimate factor. I would love to go to Atlanta and have people give admiring stares to my natural hair but where I have lived natural hair is not revered unless it is what is commonly referred to as “good hair”. It can get to you when people are CONSTANTLY looking at your hair with dismay or even just politely asking you why dont you get a perm? Believe me, this comes from those you know and complete strangers. So all I am saying is that ones skin can become a little raw from the abrasive comments and then toughen up in an overzealous way.

  7. @ VIxen – as a Atlanta resident that is so true! When I wear my hair natural I get people stopping me asking how they can go natural and how they want to SO BAD and they are scared. Sadly, most don’t know where to go on the web for advice or more information. I am also conscious about directing them to sites like Nappturality because most of these women have perms or have weaves and will probaly ask the gamut of questions and I don’t want them to be jumped on for asking the wrong question. It’s sad, but as Laquita said – naturals and hair police — be conscious that you might be turning someone away from making a great decision for their hair. Be nice and just answer the question. Niceness and maturity in responses are always the best – and if you know they are asking a question that is wrong Direct message them as help them off the post or email them some resources. In the end they are just looking for help and support.

i was once a member of nappturality and haven’t visited that place in a year. a friend of mine warned me about the favoritism, racism and shaqueesha attitudes over there and i didn’t listen. but reading that site with the nasty attitudes and high-school childishness from women in their 30’s and 40’s and it doesn’t take long to understand why black men, as well as white people, hispanics and asians, prefer mixed or other females and dislike most black women or develop a strong dislike for them.

go over there and look at many of the members’ fotkis. these are the bottom of the rung girls as nappturality is mostly populated by nappy-headed females that are disgustingly fat, ugly or both. maybe the owner should be given an award for giving these angry pigs a place to get together, whine, commiserate and cry about nobody finding them attractive since the pretty natural chicks eventually leave that septic tank for healthier-minded natural and curly hair boards. dudes stay far away since nappturality may have 2 or 3 male posters and the minute some of these chicks spot a male poster, they are pathetic. they either start throwing their i-panties at them or act like every semi-literate post the dude makes is deep profound knowledge.

and it is not just that the nappy nazis spray their ghetto attitude insults in the hair forum of nappturality that make it a dismal hole, it is how the owner (who is full of shit and dishonest) has allowed a bastion of messiness and intolerance in sections outside the hair forum. she and her lame ignorant moderators don’t just ban posters for making a ‘how can I straighten my hair’ post, they ban individuals if, by chance, they were not obama supporters or held other political or social opinions that were not in line with their designated ‘black political thought’. i was banned because i supported another presidential candidate and not an obama ass licker.

there was once about 5 really pretty and really intelligent females there but nappturality has a huge clique of unattractive women that obviously don’t have a life and spend way too much time on that board, and the owner and moderators allow this clique of cows to run the board, get away with rule-breaking and decide people should not be at nappturality simply because they don’t like their opinions.

  9. Grey Grey says:

I agree with this article, eventhough I am a member of Napp. they are rude to newly nappy people if they ask a question that is deemed trivial.

  10. Tania Because I Don Tania Because I Don't Hide Behind Fake Names says:

when logic fails just call people ugly. that’s always the way to bring intelligence and insight to any argument.

  11. bellamari bellamari says:

    logic?

does that take away from the real deal holyfield, grey? anyone in this world with internet access can skip over to nappturality and take a look. if the posters don’t have weight loss trackers in their signatures or their faces included as an avatar or in their signatures, just read their posts or click on their fotki links and the truth is told that most of them are not only ugly, but fat.

nappturality is not just intolerant on opinions about hair, it is intolerant regarding different opinions that have nothing to do with hair. i got banned over a year ago because i was not an obama supporter. illogic is banning people that support natural hair and never said anything against natural hair on that nappturality board and broken no rules but because they don’t tow the negro line or carry the nigg– banner that the small-minded and simple-mined black soul patrol clique at nappturality has deemed acceptable.

does not make me happy admitting this but because this is how the owner runs that site, the only conclusion to reach is an affirmation that ugly, fat and sometimes dark chicks are bitter, angry and mean. worthless and not worth anyone’s consideration any longer.

  12. Wildchild Wildchild says:

@Jazmine said: “I ran across more than a few when I was a newbie over at Nappturality. I remember I made a post about straightening my hair after I got a couple more inches and they next day I came back I have like 30 comments of girls, pretty much attacking me. I have to say that day, I was like if this is how all “naturals” act, then forget it.”

@Jboogie said: “I was once a member of Nappturality and left after some of the members “reported” a picture of my hair after I took my braids out…I was contacted by an admin and was told that my hair “appeared” chemically straighten lol…which was not. I made a discussion thread about it but it got deleted so I decided to leave quietly. Any place where my texture is not appreciated I don’t need to be a part of.”

@Bellamari said: “i was once a member of nappturality and haven’t visited that place in a year. a friend of mine warned me about the favoritism, racism and shaqueesha attitudes over there and i didn’t listen. and it is not just that the nappy nazis spray their ghetto attitude insults in the hair forum of nappturality that make it a dismal hole, it is how the owner (who is full of shit and dishonest) has allowed a bastion of messiness and intolerance in sections outside the hair forum.”

Jazmine, Jboogie and Bellamrai I had similar experience. At first I offered access to my Fofki and because I have light eyes and natural long hair below my bottom and include pictures of my hair blow-dried straight, several members of Napptrality left nasty messages on my Fotki that I had to delete and I offered no more. Bellamari’s comment were harsh, but I agree with most of what she said because even outside hair forum, Napptrality site is very intolerant of opinion of women from other countries.

That Napptrality site only like African Amercan girl and African American insight opinion, but not opinion of female with African descent throughout diaspora and they all the time criticize light skin women or cry if for Zoe Saldana or Hale Berry is put in movie and not some dark girl with nappy hair look like Indie Aree. There are ugly white womens and pretty white womens. Women at Napptrality act like there is not ugly black womens and pretty black womens and that all black womens should be said they are pretty all because they are black with big nose and lip or nappy hair.

  13. Vanity Vanity says:

bellamari, you sound like a childish 30 something. It is one thing to express an opinion that relates to the topic, but to go so far as to down dark skin women with kinky natural hair is sad on your part. But since you want to go there I am a dark skinned super kinky natural hair wearing black woman. I am not fat and I have yet to find competition in the looks department from any light skinned or mixed woman. I AM intimidating and I know it, when I walk into the room I KNOW ALL eyes will be on me. I don’t have a problem with a woman of any skin color or hair type and I am a member or NP. It sounds to me that you are the one with issues and it goes deeper than hair.

  14. Bellamari Bellamari says:

smoke that crack and be delusional all you like, vanity. i won’t doubt that you might walk into a room and be OK (simply OK), but you couldn’t compete if we walked into a room together on your best day so now deal with the entirety of what i wrote.

nappturality is full of threads stating how black, white, hispanic, asian and all other men go for the brown or light skin girl and ignore the dark or african american girl. it has more than enough threads stating how your own black men prefer mixed or other women instead of african american women.

i think it is not your looks but your nasty attitudes and constant loud mouths that can not shut up and learn to listen and learn, but nappturality is full of threads of dark nappy females crying about this light skin female being put in a movie or being a love interest. and anyone with internet access can see that a lot of the females at nappturality are fat, unattractive or both. the few coward light skin females at nappturality are too busy being insecure and licking the asses of dark nappies to get acceptance and pitiful too.

  15. Goldgoddess Goldgoddess says:

    to: laquita thomas-banks

i am glad you wrote this article and agree with a lot of it. i don’t think you meant to call out nappturality but that site stanks so much it was obvious. i feel that site does an disservice to new naturals and lifetime naturals.

i am still a member at nappturality but only lurk because i do not like the way of most of the girls there. some of the crabs at nappturality were yapping about this article today in one of their forums, then that ignorant and disgusting moderator w locked the thread and did her usual of deleting posts.

moderator w you iz a punk! why not go toe to toe to show and prove what’s true instead of going y’all’s usual bitch ass route and displaying how you, the other moderators, and the owner of nappturality (dee) really do things there and delete posts, try to intimidate and bark “don’t add their posts or link their sites” then lock threads to prevent the real, total and complete truth about nappturality from being shown?

oh what did you say? you know you “have no power outside the militant abyss of intolerant black ignorance that is nappturality?” yes, little fat baby, i know! and that makes you low rent so never get the term bitch ass whiney ‘coward’ twisted with ‘strong woman.’ neither you, dee or any of the other moderators or tattle-tales that go crazy reporting people and crying at nappturality are strong women in the least.

quit being a common nigg*r, big moderator w, and think outside your limited negro box for once in your life. just a bit of advice but the way you, dee and the rest of the stupid and unfair moderators operate at nappturality is a prime example of why most african americans remain in the gutter or at the bottom of most lists 145 years after the end of slavery no matter the subject.

i and others are howling laughing because your unfair and lopsided ass, co-hort moderators and dee can’t control shit outside the close-minded environment at nappturality to prevent truth-tellers from spreading the real about nappturality. and, oh yes, others will be informed by any “means necessary” [thank you, Malcolm] of where to go to read the truth.

why posters remain stupid enough to still subscribe and give money to nappturality just boggles the mind. it is blatantly obvious that due to being ridiculously, nauseatingly and obviously unfair, that site has lost supporters and many of it’s most intelligent posters. nappturality is fascist beyond belief and, outside of issues regarding natural hair, that site is not about right vs. wrong or fair vs. unfair. it is about made-up and arbitrarily applied rules the wack assed owner (like a dictator) wakes up with so “nappy nazis” is more than appropriate for those troglydites there. nappturality has become boring, dry and less relevant, thought-provoking, intelligent and useful (especially with the creation of other natural hair sites). i am glad that many of it’s previous members and $$ contributors have either left, stop contributing or will be contacted and picked off one by one by showing them the truth. so the owner, unfair mods and stupid mod pets should get to digging into their own pockets to financially support nappturality by themselves. they should enjoy talking to and among themselves, remaining ignorant of others outside north america, only allow an african american view, and keep the site to their own bitter controlling selves.

it would just be cool if the powers that be at nappturality had either woman sized clits or man sized balls to make those previous facts and their intolerance crystal clear in the “rules” upfront so the gullible would not give $$ and become subscribers, then find out the truth.

  16. EclecticJam EclecticJam says:

I think this is an awesome article. I have read many of the comments and agree with some and disagree with others. I think whether natural or relaxed you should be informed and research. You dont just go into a dealership to buy a new car and point at one and say thats it without researching anything about the car. Its important to know what you are doing to your hair not only so you can be informed but it shows you have knowledge of your descision and you are aware of the history and the effects of your descision. but ultimatley its up to you, you make the choice. and like with the natural hair nazi’s there choice to comment may come off worse than what they expected. everyone is entitled to there opinion and we should embrace each other regardless of it.

  17. Clutch Magazine Clutch says:

Clutch and the ladies of Clutch just want to say that we are big fans of Nappturality. I myself (Dede) was a very active member at one time and my experience was great and very positive. If it wasn’t for Nappturality and the beautiful women that frequent the site I wouldn’t have went through my natural transition so smoothly. For the most part – the community is extremely supportive, loving and full of women who are very happy to help/support another woman through her progression to natural.

Let’s remember every site (even Clutch) has its bad apples, and we applaud Nappturality for being one of the only communities on the web for black women who are interested and dedicated to natural hair. Nappturality is one the greatest communities and resources on the web for those who are and want to learn more about going natural.

Let’s remember that this article was not to bash anyone or any site. It was to list some experiences that SOME naturals go through in their hair journey. So ladies, please be nice to each other and most importantly – be respectful.

    xoxo,

    Clutch

  18. vanity vanity says:

Bellamari, you wish I was just OK. If we walked into a room, I know I wouldn’t have to worry about you. It is not black men who think that dark skin women are unattractive, it is you. That is why you think you are more than competition for me. I on the other hand know that you ain’t got nothing on me because I know what I look like. You are basing your perception on skin color. You really do have some deep issues. Just because a person is light doesn’t imply your hair isn’t super kinky and just because your hair is super kinky doesn’t imply ugly and just because you are dark doesn’t imply your hair isn’t curly. The natural nazis are not just dark skinned women as you imply. Also these women who seem overzealous are just protecting the image that napptural hair is beautiful. I went natural specifically for my 5 year old daughter(who was 3 at the time) to show her that natural hair is beautiful and that God didn’t make a mistake in her. She has curly hair and while people are always telling her how pretty she and her hair are, that really doesn’t compete with barbie and cinderella and all of the little girls in her class with straight hair, in which some have told her that her hair was ugly.

So bellamari, just stick to the subject, as you are making wild claims that show you have some deep rooted issues and you sound too old for anyone to have to have this conversation with.

  19. lee lee says:

aw why is this topic so hot for black women i’ll never know! lol it is true that some people think that natural hair is the pits and vice versa but i honestly didn’t realize this was a real debate among black women until i went natural. i do prefer natural hair on me but i don’t see anything wrong with straightening your hair or wearing perms. whatever floats your boat makes my ship flip. i hope that we can go beyond this silliness and remember that “it’s just hair!”. perms, weaves and lace fronts do NOT offend all naturals. i could care less what other people do to their hair. also i do not think that just because someone straightens their hair or even decides to dye their hair blonde is white washed or trying to be white. that’s just ridiculous. no one makes those claims when women with dreadlocs dye their locs blonde. straight hair is just another styling option that’s available to women of all nationality who want versatility with their hair. no one accuses white or asian women of trying to be black when they get curly perms. if someone wants whatever they want permanently or temporarily it’s not that deep. it’s just hair…

  20. LaKeyshaF LaKeyshaF says:

In the grand scheme of things…hair is just hair

But since we’re talking about it…

For us to have a complete and healthy view of ourselves as individuals and us as a culture we need to learn to accept and love those characteristics that make us generally different from other cultures.

Our hair is one MAJOR difference and we faithfully alter it to look like another cultures. (Even when europeans get curly perms they are only looking for curls that imitate their culture…I have YET to see any of them aim for a fro).

As I stated in a previous post…is it really possible that 400 years of enmity concerning our hair has nothing to do with the fact that 85% of us use harmful chemicals to straighten our hair to look like that of the authors of our suppression?

I wish our hair was like our behinds. lol. It is a distinct characteristic of AA’s to have larger rounder butts than other cultures. But we have EMBRACED this characteristic no matter what other cultures say.

  21. lee lee says:

i’d like to add that i have a real problem with people that think all people who wear their hair natural do so to make some political statement against “our oppressors”. some people really do wear their hair naturally just because they like the way it looks. however it’s sad that black people cannot just be. we always have to justify why we do anything. it’s kind of ridiculous.

  22. Soul Cry Soul Cry says:

    I fully agree with Chloe.

  23. LaKeyshaF LaKeyshaF says:

One of the greatest tools of dominant cultures is to make the personal political.

We cannot deny that the natural curling of our hair was used as a tool to back up the supposedly inherent inferiority of our race. (kinky, nappy, etc. were created to sum up our inferiority…much like the N-word)

Everyone can wear their hair as they choose…I just wish that our community acknowledged the true beauty of natural hair.

We have been regularly and subtly taught to dislike our natural hair which leads us to make not so independant decisions to relax. (There are ALWAYS exceptions)

and i will stick to whatever i choose since your irrelevant black ass can’t dictate what i do or write nor tell me what to do. you described yourself as “intimidating” and i hate to inform you that you black females have no power and, because you don’t, all you can do is jump up, roll your necks, get loud and act masculine or like shaqueeshaghetto then delude yourself into thinking that this makes you “intimidating” when all that is is annoying, clownish or something people laugh at. it is 2009 and black females need to finally get it that their loud mouths, messiness and ghetto attitudes is tired and should be buried. more and more men do not want that type of mess.

i DID “stick to the subject” in my first post which was “nappy nazis” and, next, that racist nappturality site, i wrote about nappturality’s fascist tactics in forums that have nothing to do with hair so girls that are considering going natural know the deal before going over there or giving that site money. it is just that you did not like my opinions and, out of everything i wrote, decided to zero in on a figment of your imagination (words i did not write) and accuse of ‘downing dark skin women with kinky natural hair’ and calling me “childish” etc. i gave my opinion and, if you didn’t like it, oh well, but call me another name and i will call you names and cuss you out right back!

you are typical, vanity! a typical hypocritical nappturality troglodyte dummy that makes up shit, sees offense in everything under the sun, can’t read, always plays the victim and chills in the cut reading bitter angry haters at nappturality write the most racist, ugliest and meanest things about mixed, light skin, hispanic and white people time and again and over and over and say nothing. oh but shaqueesha comes out to hoop and holler even if she has to conjure up an insult against dark skin? maybe, vanity, you need to find some integrity and be flapping your lips at the racists and racism at nappturality. and, for your reading pleasure, here is a recent quote from nappturality (though there are thousands upon thousands that has spanned the last few years) of how the owner, mods and blackadicious nappturality cowards constantly insult light skinned and other folks:

“I still hated seeing all light skinned, curly headed/relaxed black folks.. Like ain’t no “100%’s” no more.”

finally, i love the example you are trying to provide for your daughter and don’t doubt that both you and she are very beautiful. but don’t overlook the truth about nappturality, it’s racism and way many of the posters there slam light and mixed chicks on the regular then try talk shit to me about your made up insult against dark skin women because people are tired of that kind of concocted crap.

Bellamari, I would not have even commented on your post had it not been for this comment which points out dark skin women. Put this together with your previous post and I am left to believe there are some issues:

“the only conclusion to reach is an affirmation that ugly, fat and sometimes dark chicks are bitter, angry and mean.”

In general I agree that some people over there can be over the top to a point that I belonged for over a year before I even participated due to the rudeness I found in some women. But everyone there isn’t like that and I have seen those people get put in their place many times. I can admit that when a person wants to discuss defining their coils/curls(or discuss hair with looser curls), it can get a little heated, but again, you have a few that go off and the rest are supportive of the questioner. I straighten my hair maybe once every 6 or so months, but I wouldn’t dare discuss that over there. So please stop generalizing, because there are threads on NP where people have discussed the rudeness of some members. Nasty people are going to exist on every site, I don’t believe they are a product of NP.

Again, I still ‘heart’ Nappturality and I am sorry that many have experienced negative comments from the site. Throughout my years of subscribing to the site (yes, I am a paying member – but remember you don’t necessarily have to pay to be a member) I have come across only a handful of negative comments, fortunately none directed to me and I have witnessed negative posts shut down by moderators. I also credit Nappturality for putting me in the position I am in today – writing (with knowledge) about natural hair.

Like Clutch said, there are always going to be bad apples and I am determined not to let them deter me from the insight and friendships – the Meet Ups are great by the way – and all that I have gained and continue to gain from being a member of the site :o)

One of the ways I combat negative comments that I come across on various sites is by encouraging those who are wrongfully attacked either by commenting directly on a post and/or sending them a direct message pretty much with the same things I stated in the piece, and providing them with my blog site or email address so they can ask me directly questions that they have. There is a great feature on Nappturality called Adopt a Newbie where you can provide help to those interested or new to the natural hair journey. That, the transitioners board and product boards are my favorite hangouts on Nappturality :o)

Also I want to remind everyone of Hairlista and K.I.S.S. and other hair sites like those, where those who are natural, permed, pressed etc. come together to share product ideas, compete in challenges and so on…

  29. Bellamari Bellamari says:

let us make it clear that the issue here is about natural hair sites, but vanity i see what you mean about my comment “the only conclusion to reach is an affirmation that ugly, fat and sometimes dark chicks are bitter, angry and mean.” i coulda done better and been less abrasive but note that i also mentioned “fat” chicks.

you are not slick and i noticed how you continue to skip over the fact of how too many nappturality members are hateful, racist and make nasty and racist comments about light skin, mixed, hispanic and white people without being checked by either members or admin. i am part black and that site made me start to despise african american females with a passion, and i am not proud of that but i understand more now that i ever wanted to.

you are right and i know that every nappturality poster is not like that, because i was not like that when i used to participate at nappturality. but the way dee and her wack moderators allow their ugly favorite dumb-militant bitches (that are like that) to dictate membership, run the site, then discipline ‘outsiders’ because the ugly favorite dumb-militant bitches constantly ‘report’ and complain about them when the ‘outsider’ broke no rules but wrote comments they didn’t agree with or like, has set the tone and definition for what nappturality is. females interested in being natural and embracing their natural selves need to know this before they join or give over one red cent to that site.

also, I think nappturality is complicit in keeping people enslaved and worse than whitey in it’s “kill count” in many ways i.e. how (i guess in an effort to make fat cow nappturality members feel comfort) they basically rubber-stamp horrendous habits of eating trash food, overeating and being disgustingly fat and ‘get at’ those who speak out against it when ugly big basketball head fat cows complain.

they got them ugly fat rhinos at nappturality comfortable on some crusade to try to change people’s perception of what is beautiful from healthy firm and tight bodies to rolls of blubber, laziness, double-chins and back fat. hate to tell ‘em but that shit ain’t gone happen in their lifetime so they can big up each other all day and dream on!

nappturality has an ignore feature but, instead of utilizing the ignore feature on member’s whose views they did not like, the dumb controlling insecure monkeys lived to read every word. if dee and her lame moderators were real and true women and had even an ounce of integrity, they’d have told complainers to utilize the ‘ignore’ feature but, instead, they chose to go low and act like typical niggers and bend to the cows. dee and her moderators behave as irrationally and stupidly as those dumb niggers in the LA riots that burned their own community but didn’t have the sense nor equipment to go to the source (whitey) and burn that. just dumb! dumb for infinity!

i received way too many e-mails to doubt that my observations about nappturality and a great portion of it’s members, admin and moderators are on point, and are feelings shared by many who were and are afraid to state them due to knowing how illogical, unfair, biased and racist the owner and her moderators can be if one does not tow some designated “black” line or their favorites constantly ‘report’ and complain about posters who broke no rules, but whose comments these fat ugly fucks didn’t like.

  30. Christina W Cdubb says:

Every negative comment on this article affirms my appreciation for the mods at NP. Not matter how stringent or lax the moderation is, at least it is there. To allow the perpetual posting of ugly comments that produce nothing but negative energy, really puts a cloud over the good information a website is trying to convey. Just as negative comments turn people away from NP, they will turn people away from here as well.
