Where Naturals Commune

Monday Oct 5, 2009 – By Laquita Thomas-Banks

Many have heard of the pioneer natural hair community sites such as Nappturality, Motowngirl and/or Natural Hair Digest, but over the last few years there have been several more of these hair communities launched on the Internet. Those in search of and/or who are eager to share product reviews, hairstyles or even advice on life in general, now have a wide range of Internet communities to choose from, which also feature health and beauty advice, meet-ups, contests and discussion forums.

AfroGlitz - caters to curly and kinky haired beauties, both loose-haired and loc’ed. Within AfroGlitz, you can create your own profile, gallery, blog, submit your hair story and much more. AfroGlitz also has an online magazine – http://afroglitzmag.com/ which features articles and blog posts ranging from art, fashion, beauty, love and literature, as well as articles profiling members of the natural hair community. AfroGlitz’ CEO Gee – manages to find the most beautiful and rare natural hair pictures featuring hairstyles from African tribes, as well as those pictured on covers Jet Magazines from the 70’s.

YMIB – You Make It Beautiful

YMIB’s Inner Circle members can also post their pictures and blog entries.

Afrobella – Celebrating All Shades of Beauty

This community created by the Afrobella herself, Patrice Yursik of Afrobella.com focuses on positivity, beauty, intelligence, and natural hair. Just like her website, the Afrobella community is composed of wonderful discussion topics on beauty, natural hair care, skin care, and more, but there you will be able to further explore the topics of her posts by sharing your views with members of the Afrobella community, as well as post your own pictures, videos and blog.

Natural Sunshine

This community was created by Sunshine Abuwi who also sells her very own natural hair products – Peacelovesunshine.etsy.com. The site features helpful posts such as, How to Prepare Your Significant Other for Your Natural Journey, and interesting discussion topics such as Big Chops are Only for Beautiful Women, and Is Hair Just Hair? It also consists of groups such as Natural Vets, Newly Natural and I’m Transitioning.

This is a great list. It’s great to see that there are all of these resources for black woment that have chosen to or are considering going natural. Hopefully, a follow-up to this will be a listing of sites or future articles focusing on the other many ways that black women rock their tresses- weaves, relaxers, braid extensions, pixie cuts, etc.

I love curlynikki too, but I believe this article is referring to online communities not blogs.

I have natural hair, but I love Traycee’s K.I.S.S. network. She has relaxed hair but many of the techniques she uses can be interchangeable.
