Each edition, we strive to bring you the latest buzz in the fashion industry. This month, the name on everyone’s lips as the up and coming one to watch is Smart Fitzjerrell.
Smart Fitzjerrell is a new women’s clothing collection that, according to its creator, Mary Kathryn Wells is, “about good-humored style that breaks the rules of convention and still looks invariably polished.” Named for her grandparents, the Smart Fitzjerrell clothing line pays homage to Wells’ humble design beginnings. Wells discovered her love for creating clothes after having spent a week learning to sew while visiting her grandparents in Arkansas. According to Wells, she and her grandmother would begin early each morning and work well into the evenings on her first creation, a vintage dress made out of green satin material. By the end of her one week stay, Wells’ grandparents gave her a sewing machine and offered to pay for formal sewing classes at FIT.

A Little Rock, Arkansas native, Wells currently resides in New York City where Smart Fitzjerrell is made. Much of her fashion’s inspiration, as Wells states, stems from “the style of East Village dive bars, loud music and rowdy kids who most certainly weren’t wearing their mothers’ pearls (contrary to my upbringing in Arkansas). I love mixing the myriad styles of New York with my own slightly traditional style — pairing bubble skirts with old T-shirts and cocktail dresses with motorcycle jackets.”
Currently, Smart Fitzjerrell is only available in sizes 0-10 but there are plans to expand to a size 14 as demand for the line increases. And while larger sizes are not offered, the signature design of Smart Fitzjerrell is “body-friendly” and flatters many body types. “I’m a pretty curvaceous woman – I’ve got a butt and boobs and hips, and I love them, but I also know how to dress to flatter them, which is what I aim for in designing Smart Fitzjerrell,” says Wells.

Smart Fitzjerrell targets the confident woman, unafraid to stand out in a crowd and possessing their own personal sense of style. It is for the woman who wants to be draped in patterns that, according to Wells, fit, flatter and are fun. This line is for the girl that is always the life of the party. It is for the girl who understands looks aren’t everything but also knows that a great dress demands attention.

The Smart Fitzjerrell collection includes dresses, skirts and tops all made from beautiful fabrics. Although the line is not currently in stores, you can purchase Smart Fitzjerrell at Girlshop, in New York City and at Tallulah in Little Rock.
