Sophie Hulme
Rarely is it that a designer comes along whose entire collection features key pieces that “wow” us! Most often, lines are built upon a strong foundation of mix-and-match basics, with a few headlining pieces that stop the show. But for newcomer Sophie Hulme, no such filling was needed. She had an exact vision in mind for her designs, and wasted no time in conveying it to the rest of the fashion world.
Sophie, a native of London, graduated last year from the UK’s Kingston University. And after having received great accolades for her work – “Student of the Year” and “Best Collection” – she was given the push to launch her own eponymous label less than a year later.
Sophie Hulme defines her collections thus far as “military surplus with a luxury feel.” Hulme uses menswear as a main source of inspiration for her silhouettes, but adds special accents and embellishments to the pieces that contrastingly radiate a feminine flair. For example, a typically masculine hooded parka is transformed into a fab evening coat with the addition of vibrant purple sequins throughout! Other head-turning details include oversized bows, high funnel collars and concealed cargo pockets.
While Sophie’s creations are flashy and fun to look at, she never compromises on quality and craftsmanship as well. Each piece is handmade with luxurious fabrics from all over the globe, and built to last. And as an added plus for the lucky lady who buys a Sophie Hulme piece, each collection features a special trinket that is included with every garment; for A/W ‘08 it was a whistle, and S/S ‘09 features a golden military cadet. The purpose, you ask? Well, after several collections, you’ll be able to use the trinkets to create a collectible charm bracelet. What a great idea?!
Only two collections in, Sophie Hulme is on a roll, and we can’t wait to see what she comes up with next! But whatever new themes she decides to explore, we know they’ll be girly-glam with a hard, masculine edge to boot. You heard it here, first!
