It was proven best in the fashionable documentary The September Issue, that Fall is the New Year’s of fashion. Fashion forward women everywhere look forward to this one season in particular to muster up the oomph to march into their closets, throw out the old and bring in the new. Now, we’ve already covered in our Fall Trend Report, what most of you naturally will be flocking to this style season but, there are still some fashionistas we’re sad to discover who have fell off the wagon. This list was pretty painful to compile at times as we’ve had our share of good times partaking in some of these trends ourselves but, it’s time to hang em’ up or throw them out ladies. We can no longer ignore these top ten fashion trends that must go!
1. Vinyl Leggings:
How did they even convince us these pants were sexy to wear? Hot, sticky and just plain ol’ tacky, these once popular party pants must be packed away into the fashion time capsule and opened…never again.
2. Phrase Graphic Tees:
I know what you’re thinking, “But, t-shirts are comfortable and quick!” right? Yes, they are. We can’t argue with that. But, a graphic tee on a grown woman is an automatic fail. Stock up on your solids girls!
3. Neon & Printed Stockings:
Remember the Fall Report? Sexy, sophisticated, sheer! That’s the direction we’re headed. We want to accentuate our legs not draw circuslike attention to them.
4. Rope Chains & Bamboo Earrings:
The retro phase has been dying out the past few seasons but, we’re still seeing an occasional bamboo earring and rope chain here and there. Tisk, tisk, tisk. Definitely time to hang this one up unless you’re headed to a throwback costume party.
5. Lace:
Lace gloves, lace shirts, lace dresses, cross them all off the list of trends you might’ve been hoping didn’t get the axe. Just as 80’s inspired as a rope chain and bamboo earrings, this phase of fashion has ended, for good.
6. High Waists:
Anything too high waisted is out these days. For the professional woman, a slight high-waisted skirt is always a classy alternative but, once you start inching too high up the rib cage whether in a skirt or jeans you’re crossing into the bad trend zone.
7. Uggs:
We love Uggs in the same respect that Jay-Z does Autotune. We got it, we enjoyed it but, lets get back to style the Ugg overkill is the equivalent of “T-Paining too much”. Uggs are soft and warm in cold winters but, they aren’t waterproof in a snowstorm and definitely shouldn’t be worn in place of sandals with a miniskirt and tank top in the summer.
8. Pointy Toed Stilettos:
If you own or are considering purchasing a shoe in which the toe is a 20 degree angle to wear out on the town, don’t do it. The point of your shoe should no longer be able to kill a bug in the corner.
9. Studs:
Put the bedazzler down! Rocker chic studs and diamond embellishments are sometimes fun, chic and flashy but, only a few accents are needed to exude the look you’re going for.
10. Layering:
Homeless chic is no longer an “in” look. No need to throw on leggings, a mini skirt, a tank top and long sleeved button down shirt underneath that cardigan and oversized jacket. That’s way too many clothes. Less is more!
Looking and feeling your best is always a fashion do but, beware of the dont’s because there are fashion police lurking around every corner!

I’m glad for the layering trend, it’s cold where I live.
I’ve been praying for pointy toes to phase out since the trend started.
everything should be done in moderation. layering can be great but not in that particular example you provided. perhaps, a more chic layered outfit would be acceptable? i pull out my bamboo earrings every once in a blue moon and they serve me well. ugg boots, a no no!
thanks jenna pearle
how is layering a trend? Last time i checked it was how to dress when it is cold! there is a difference in neat layering and looking sloppy.
all these styles can be worn in moderation.
Lace stocking can be done in good taste. Although I HEART my leather look tights I am quite sick of the trends… Tights are not basis for an outfit- June Ambrose. Pointy toes and the rocker look are way too trendy. I also must confess that I will never out away my bamboo hearts I only pull them out on bad hair day weekends when I rock a hat.
Layering can be a trend and is a trend for some.

it’s many more out there too. I would say some DO take layering to the NEXT level. I loved the article by the way.
I’ve been an “Ugg” hater since I first saw them…smg I used to tell my friend Ugg stands for UGLY AS HELL. I must disagree with the studs phasing out though- I think they’re so cute!
I agree with the other commentators. Layering is not a trend. It is a necessity.
I really don’t see whats wrong with any of these things if done right. Plus people should wear whatever they feel like wearing. Who cares what is in or out.
I just can’t part with my Uggs….often times I wake up late for class and I have to run out of my dorm in a hurry. Boston winters are brutal and Uggs keep my feet toasty. Its not a shoe, its a way of life =D
I have to agree with Ashley. Nothing wrong with anyone of these, as long as it’s done right.
ok i agree with the pointed shoe I gave it up a few season ago but the vinyl leggings damn it’s going to be hard
my mom said I should get rid of them she hate it! lol thanks for the post clutch ;)
and how come I’m no longer receiving my weekly clutch’s notice?
I think you could still look classy wearing a long top on shiny leggings as long as it’s covering your hips and butt that should be fine
no to pointy toed shoes, and i laughed at the bug part. i hate the leggings and stockings soo tacky and not cute, any thing 80s was over killed
Buy UGG boots ?
Uggs are a way of life….just look at how they were started! They dawned out of the surfer culture and became something very essential. If I’m wearing uggs, it’s not because I’m trying to be fashionable, it’s because my feet either need to be comfortable or they need to be warm. But I guess if I were not in college and my life were a little more sophisticated then I could see how wearing uggs in public would not be okay.
I love my Uggs and I’m afraid I’ll never part with them! lol
I agree with most of this article except for the Uggs portion. I do not like to see them during the warm seasons. However, I will be rocking mine during the cold time of the year. They are the most comfortable boots in the world.
OMG I’m not getting rid of my pointy shoes or bamboo earrings! Never! LOL I’m still waiting on platforms to come back. Aahhh watch out now
i just try to stay away from looking like everyone else. if everyone else is doing it; i’m definitely not. to each it’s own, but most REAL fashionistas stay ahead of the mainstream trends. by time the masses catch on, they’re on to the next thing.
i hate these do and don’t lists. anyone that will base what they’re wearing on what everyone else is doing is a follower. to each his/her own.
Sorry to say, I DONT follow trends. I wear all of these and rock the hell out of it. ITS NOT WHAT YOU WEAR, ITS HOW YOU WEAR IT.
Not yelling, Im just saying.
Was there a world before Uggs? :) I guess once you start you dont stop.
Are y’all crazy!!!…Lace, Studs, High waists…all of these things must stay…and will carry on for more than a couple seasons I guarantee it…But all must done in the appropriate manner…but that’s just my opinion.
I have to disagree with the high waist. That should definitely stay, because those low rise and hip pants are the worst! They destroy the figure. I’ve seen young girls rocking these low rise pants and skirts and eventually developing jelly bellys and have no waist whatsoever. High waist gives us support and shape. The no-no should be to bring back the low rise. And if you use a low rise, please wear a belt on your waist over a shirt and try to train does abs and waist so you don’t lose your shape. Just an advice :-)
I agree, or at least a mid rise. too many muffin tops have been exposed with the low rises. I think I agree with most that say any of these can be worn in moderation. I like leggings (not vinyl) layering, and graphic tees, but I don’t wear them ALL THE TIME. Just like I personally think Uggs are hideous, but I know folks that rock them on occasion. its all in how you do something. But if anything is overdone IMO, its the big belt phenomenon.
I disagree with the Ugg thing. I’m from Ohio, where it SNOWS. I wear them to keep warm, not for fashion. I never agreed with girls wearing Uggs with skirts though. That’s just tacky.
This whole lists annoys me. Just a couple months ago these same things were being pushed as the “it” items. In a couple months, ill hear that the “it” item of today is the dud items of tomorrow. im sorry, i LOVE fashion but I do my own thing! Always! shoot, this is a recession i can’t afford to throw out anything. and how can anyone say no to layering? or to uggs? or to graphic tees? c’mon who wants to dress up everyday?
except for maybe 2 things, this list is SOOOOOO wrong. :\
For some of the trends listed, I do agree, we need to let go of, but others like layering, that’s has been a way of life for us in the colder states, just now other places think it’s being fashion forward. Hey if you guys can find something else to replace this trend you call layering, we’ve all ears.
The Uggs have to go!
Simply saying “…a graphic tee on a grown woman is an automatic fail.”
…is an automatic fail.
On certain occasions it may not be the most fitting attire (depending on the graphics) but I don’t have to dress with the style equivalent of Janet Reno to be grown. Not to mention a trend is something around for a season or two, graphic tees have been around for at least half a century which make them a staple.
