What do Beyonce, Victoria Beckham and Rihanna have in common? They (and many others) have all been spotted wearing designs by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga. But what makes this designer + celeb = press equation unique is that the stars come to Balenciaga as opposed to the other way around. “I consider the celebrities to be very important, of course,” Nicolas told WWD in a past interview. “But I would say it’s not at any price. What’s happening with Balenciaga is usually they come to us. They come to the brand because they like the clothes. They go to the store, they see the press and they call us. We don’t have someone looking after the celebrities and trying to get them dressed.” Well, we can certainly understand why industry insiders and starlets alike are drawn to Ghesquiere’s collections. He has an uncanny ability to take strong, almost whimsical shapes that in less capable hands would make women look silly and spin them into fashion gold.
From wildly imaginative accessories (Exhibit A: those crazy shoes pictured here on Beyonce!) to sleek and modern dresses, Nicolas’s innovation and no compromise approach to design has breathed new life into the iconic brand. His work embraces a new era of design while personifying a quote made by the man himself, Cristobal Balenciaga which sums up the spirit of the house.
“A courtier must be an architect for design, a sculptor for shape, a painter for color, a musician for harmony and a philosopher of temperance.”
For fall, the Balenciaga collection took us on a fantastic joy ride that played on futuristic ideals featuring ultra shiny structured fabrics, a mix of sharp and soft lines, and body conscious silhouettes.
