I'm really loving this series, because its covering a gamut of issues. Health. Gentrification. Employment. The Family. The fatherhood stuff strikes particularly home being a black male whose father wasn't present. . . and a relatively new father who is present in his child's life. I think in part this is as much individual responsibility - as it is a cultural responsibility. We got singers pissing on children - but then we wonder why boys don't respect girls...and girls have little esteem for themselves? The issues we face are bad not to mention double standards like "sowing wild oats" and "momma's baby, daddy's maybe". 30-40 years ago it was a cultural norm that you were a father to your children...to nowadays Barack gets looked at sideways for suggesting fatherhood is of especial importance when looking at the range of issues facing the majority of black folks.

I am really happy the struggles and contrasting lifestyles of Blacks in America has now been brought to the forefront - and by a platform as viewed and respected as CNN. I watched Part 1 of this documentary and felt it was a fair assessment of both sides of life in our communities. The diversity of our culture opens us up to a broad range of controversy and criticism but it also expands our ability to achieve feats that are unimaginable. The beauty of our culture, in spite of the struggle is what needs to be nourished, focused on, and used as nurturing sustenance for those in our generation and the ones to follow who might be heading down a path of destruction. The interracial couples provided two sides of the same coin. The numbers with regard to absent fathers is staggering but not surprising. Whoopi summed it up best in discussing her own challenges as a single parent. The welfare system made it easier on women so long as there wasn't a man in the home. Now, while that may be the case, the question is - at what and whose expense?

Lol! Sometimes our expectations can be wayyy too high. Bottom line, everyone has flaws. Point blank, me (or her) included. So don't be so judgmental. (I'm talking to myself now!). I still don't know about dating outside my race. I figure it's worth a try though, at this point.

Heyy coming in all late, my elementary school which is around the corner from my house was the school they went too, yayayaaaaaaaa!!!! I can agree with the whole test/payment plan but it's important that these young kids know that even though money helps ALOT it doesn't fully equal up to success. I would hope that they explain that to them....

I am still not ready for "Something New" but I am not opposed to it. Love is blind. But, the sister that wrote the screen play for the movie may have some really "different" expectations -- can someone make a spelling error?!

As far as abandoning children, I don't know how that will change. Men need to not only think about that child and responsibility, but that woman. I think a lot of times, men can easily leave the child because there's no respect for the woman who's carrying the child in the first place. She's just another chick he slept with. There are no other ties to each other or a real relationship, so what? I live by what my Mama told me, "whoever you lay down with is a potential father of your child." Men should think the same. If she was good enough to sleep with, be good enough to take care of the child.

Exactly, I know. SOME Black men have these expectations of how their mate is supposed to look (like Beyonce...Hi B!), act and dress -- when sadly a lot of them are not the cutest, smartest or the best catch. AND....I must say that SOME Black women are like that too - but we end up coming around ---- especially when we are stuck at the house watching Lifetime with our cat! But, a lot of men (I know) just say "I'm not trying to get married anytime soon" and continue going to the Velvet Room every weekend.

We have to talk about what happen to Black men loving and supporting Black women. Not talking about all -- cause more than half of our men are doing their thing, but why is it SO EASY to walk away from your child? That's my issue with some Black men. You help make the child and you walk away from not only the mother but your own child. Something has to change.

That would be great because there is most definitely a divide. I wish they would get into other factors in why Black women are single. It's so much more than intimidation on men's parts.

Let's see...I loved it! I thought there were other issues they could have touched on, but it was only two hours. I'm looking forward to tomorrow's special.

I loved how they showed the differences in the way we live our lives. The good, as well as the bad choices or situations we're in. I think that theme is universal, but I'd like others to leave the special knowing that there is no "prototype" or generic African American. Everyone is not a product of negativity. We share the same struggles, but yet we're all different.

And yes, Dede...Roland Fryer is my new crush! I loved the concept of licking salt off of the slave's cheek.

Hey honeys! Nice to meet you all, I’m Whitney :) Just catching a breath from all the craziness going on in the latest If Looks Could Kill episode. If you don’t know what that is yet, don’t worry, Miss Whitney is here to give you the rundown: I work with Toyota, who has released some interactive new webisodes about an aspiring fashion assistant, Bianca Turner (played by Femi Emiola, Wicked Wicked Games), who is a prime example of a woman who’s got it going on. I’m talking the dream job, a man who’s got all the ladies drooling, and the spice to keep it all together when hell hits the fan. Think James Bond meets Sanaa Lathan in “Something New”, Bianca is the girl who isn’t afraid to run in her Louboutin heels ok!

You’ll just have to see what I’m talking about by playing catch up to the latest episode, To Paris With Love, where our girl Bianca finds herself in some trouble once she gets to Paris to settle unfinished business with her father. FYI: Don’t be surprised when you find yourself reeled in like bait while trying to figure out who the bad guy is! That will make two of us haha…

Check it out: http://www.iflookscouldkill.com

On top of that, they are giving away all kinds of prizes. I’m talking about a trip to Paris, Coach gift cards, a new ’09 Toyota Camry and plenty more – trust.
Watch and let me know what you ladies think… looking forward to talking with you soon!!

Stay fab,
Bird on "Daughters of Babylon"

I remember how I loved my grandmother's hands; they were coco brown, warm, and strong. I would often press my hand against her hand and dream of the day when our fingers would match perfectly. My grandmother was a quiet woman whom I loved but never knew. She would smile the brightest smile I have ever seen now or then, and giggle, but that's about it. I wanted her to share with me her soul food recipes, but more importantly to share with me who she was and how she got from Arkansas to Indy and raised a family of eight. I wanted to know what made her giggle, cry, angry, and loving in her lifetime. Grandma died in 2006 and I never got an answer to any of my questions... But soon after, the secrets and curses of my family rose from the dead...

Have you looked in the mirror and smiled at the thought of how much you resemble your mother with those high cheek bones or how you inherited your father's sense of humor? Don't we delight in the fact that we belong to someone and that someone has deposited some of the most intriguing things about us in us by way of DNA. But what about the things that are thrust upon us without warning or choice... What about generational curses?

I have written a novel entitled, Daughters of Babylon: the Covenant. It is a fictional story of four young black girls who, before they can make choices for their own lives, are bound by the generation of sin and pain before them. Each one experiences her own devastating consequences and each fight to have their own spirits live. But, a generation of hurt and pain doesn't go away easily as these young girls find out on their journey. But, they must prevail in order to receive the Covenant. There is a unexpected ending that will have you craving for a sequel.

I have had rave reviews and am just in the early stages of promoting my book. Daughters of Babylon: the Covenant has a cult following and the women (men) who have read the novel have found themselves in one of the characters.

You can order your book from my website @ www.birdzofafeather.net. You can also view the characters on the site and put your face on whichever one you belong to. Are you a Daughter of Babylon?

I am in tears right now. Rollin' on the gad damn floor! I'm on my lunch break, so I decided to get my daily dose of Clutch. Browsing through the forums and this is what I find -- a link to "Stuff White People Like." I was soooooo crackin' up over this post: http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com/2008/04/30/97-scarves/.

"#97 Scarves" is the most funniest thing! And the comments that people left are so crazy! Like this one, "Oh that’s funny because black people can afford none of those things lololololololol." OMG, that's halarious!

Thanks for a good laugh!

For shoes - I would start with www.naturalizer.com - they have some cute options and they are very comfortable.

For clothes: I would try Old Navy, Target and check out this interview we did with Monif C. www.clutchmagonline.com/fashion/plus-size-diva-monif-c-interview - her clothes look fabulous!
