Puerto Rico is a vibrant wondrous island rich with history, a warmly festive culture and endless natural beauty. Believed to be first inhabited by the Ortoroid people as far back as 3000 BC, (and latter their descendants, the Taínos) Puerto Rico has much to offer by way of ancient history. Once a key territory of the Spanish Empire, and later a commonwealth of the United States, “the daughter of the sea and sun” has endured and emerged as a proud culture with deep multicultural roots.
There are a multitude of reasons why PR is the ultimate warm weather destination. It is the full package, offering elements of romance, adventure, relaxation, or cultural enrichment. Reverence for family is a cornerstone of Puerto Rican culture, making it an excellent destination for family excursions offering ample family oriented hotels and resorts and varied activities – but it’s also a prime location to just kick it with your friends.
Given its diverse landscape and abundant coastline, PR is an adventurer’s paradise.
Given its diverse landscape and abundant coastline, PR is an adventurer’s paradise. From the luxuriant beauty of El Yunque Rainforest, to the arid terrain of Guánica State Forest there is a plethora natural beauty to observe and explore. Surfing, snorkeling and scuba diving and more can be had along the coast of Puerto Rico and her off lying islets
Puerto Rico boasts a wide array of beaches along the coast of the main island as well as the small islands off the coast of PR such as Culebra and Vieques. Soak up the sun in the swanky yet touristy beaches of Condado and Old San Juan. Isla Verde Beach is a main attraction for those who love the nightlife. Located 30 miles from San Juan, palm tree-lined Luquillo beach is a great destination for families. Quiet and serene on the weekdays, lush Luquillo beach transforms into a festive chill spot for boricuas on the weekends. For those of you who enjoy seclusion, PR there are a host of isolated coves and beaches off the beaten path at numerous points along the island’s shoreline.
In addition to the many natural features of the captivating isle, PR boasts tons of cultural institutions and local events throughout the year including The Heineken Jazzfest, San Sebastián Street Festival, the Bacardi Distillery and the Museo de Arte Ponce.
Puerto Ricans work hard, and play hard and have a pulsating nightlife to prove it. From the upscale clubs, lounges and casinos of Isla Verde and Condado, to the local clubs of Bayamon, Ponce or the all night street festivities of La Placita in Santurce, there is much mayhem one can get into once the sun goes down. Be prepared to stay out late, as most parties don’t jump off until at least 11 p.m., and the mix of American and authentic Boricua music that fills the dance floors is irresistible.
Being a major tourist destination, PR has lodging for fit for virtually any budget. Hostels, hotels, resorts and luxury condos are available throughout the island all year round. No matter your tastes or intentions, this island has literally got something for everyone. So next time you are considering the perfect tropical getaway, consider adding Puerto Rico to the top of your list.

I heard about Puerto Rico since 1976. That time we were 10 years old. I had a primary school classmate, his mother is from St Juan, Puerto Rico and his father is local, Malaysia. Sometime during school holiday, his family will be took a vacation to his mother hometown. When school holiday end, he and his family return back to Malaysia and the school session started. Meet with him and telling about his mother hometown. The scenario he was telling me about Puerto Reco and more or less the same as your article here. Hope the coming near I will be there to visit you place.
You know what sucks, Black folks will ignore this article, because we act like traveling is for White Folks only. Sometimes. Thanks for sharing this. I have gone many places in my lifetime, and appreciate you showcasing this article on Puerto Rico. I may have to go.
I just returned from San Juan, Puerto Rico for Memorial weekend! I loved it! The best trip I have ever been on!
I heard about the event called Urban Fiesta there through S.E.T. network online e-blast and investigated the prices myself, with their recommendations, and posed the trip to my friends. Although the event list was the cliche grown and sexy and the events were over priced for an Atlantan and even New Yorkers the people who attended all came to party that weekend. Whether it was the Embassy Suites hotel happy hour, Isla Verde beach, Old San Juan Club Lazer young black professionals came to have fun by any means necessary.
I also got to practice my Spanish a little bit and despite the cloudy skies I plan on returning again! I missed the Rum factory but El Yunque was amazing!
Great info – beautiful pictures. I would love to go to Puerto Rico someday :o)
Thanks for writing this wonderful piece Sky (as you always do, since you are one of my fave authors here at Clutch!!) I went to the Great PR last year with my best friend. We had an insane time!!! Shout outs to Hector the tour guide for leaving us to find our way out of the El Yunique Rainforest ALONE like we were on survivor! HaHa, I made it home, son!!!!
Puerto Rico has always been somewhere i would love to visit.
I plan to make it my next trip. My friends just left last month and it looked like they had a blast.
