The Jump Off—Pump. Pump, Pump Pump. Pump it up!

Wednesday Aug 1, 2007 – By Shantel Brown

joebudden.jpgIt’s like music to your ears when your text message alerts you to “have a good day!” How sweet it is to get those unsuspecting phone calls from the man who is attempting to sweep you off your feet. By lunch time—another alert “thinking bout you!” Now your smile has went from Cali to New York in 3.5 seconds. He’s really laying it on thick now, and as soon as you clock out for the day the phone is ringing, with him on the other end saying “I’m trying to see you this evening.” How overjoyed you become as you tell your homegirls, “This one might be the one ya’ll!” Your girls don’t make it any better as they are planning out your wedding announcements without even meeting this new cat.

The morning, afternoon, and late evening phone calls continue for about three months. Followed by dinners, movies and pure quality time. At the beginning of the fourth month mark, the morning text turns into an afternoon text. That afternoon text turns into an evening call, and that evening call turns into a late night BOOTY CALL! OK, we have all heard the stereotypical tiers that men have (1) Wifey (2) Baby girl (3) Side piece and (4) the JUMP OFF!

For those who have had the pleasure of not receiving this popular email forward, here it is . . .

Now, I pride myself on being Wifey, but have I subjected myself to becoming the Jump Off. Yeah, I answered the phone and let him come over at 2:30 a.m. (after the club) a few times; actually, more than a few times. But, the question is this—if you want it are you playing yourself, or are you getting yours? Now your smile has went from Cali to Florida in 3.5 seconds.

Is it possible to redeem yourself? Is there a way to go from Jump Off back to Wifey status with the same guy, or do we tastefully move on to the next with hopes that this one “may be the one, ya’ll?” You decide.

Now that I am a bit older, I just give it time and let it all play out. If a catch and I last past the 6th month mark and all is still on the up and up, I foresee things being okay by that first year. If I can say the same after the first year, cool. I just play it by ear, expect nothing, keep my hopes very low, and this gets me through.

All of this jsut sounds like spreading spit around. Nasty. and God knows what else. Please, there is nothing wrong with being a one women man, if you got the right one you’re not missing anything else.

  3. Kai Kai says:

The fact that women would subject themselves to be thought of like this is sickening and pathetic. I can’t believe the author ended the article with ‘oh, I’m a wifey!’. Are you serious? Where do you keep your self respect? It’s bad enough to be degraded by men like this. There is no reason to join in.

Stuff like this is why so many of the younger generation are totally fine with sleeping with ever guy on the block and having children with all of them. If it’s alright to be a wifey (and other women are taking pride in it), than it must be okay to be a jump-off, a baby girl or a side piece. Ugh. The entire article is disgusting.

Women need to stop aspiring to be wifeys and be wives. Be the woman who marries the man who will be faithful to her and their children and who raises her daughter to understand what it’s like to be a woman who is treated with respect by a man who loves her. Everything else is just sad and fake.

BTW, if you’re not interested in being married that’s fine, but creating a hierarchy where you can establish your significance against all of the other women he’s sleeping with is unnecessary. To a guy, no matter when he calls, if you give it up over a text message you’re no better than the next girl.

  4. Sugarsista Sugarsista says:

She is not condoning it. She is just telling you how some people think. If thats not your cup of tea fine. But to be so offended by it is crazy to me. If you read the note she says most of the article was from a popular email. Are the jump offs getting mad?

  5. Kelly B. Kelly B. says:

Where in the text does it tell you to “sleep with many men?” If that is the way you have interpreted this article then you are sadly mistaken. This article is purely about how some men tier women not all but some taken from an email. If the author wanted to talk about family values she would write an article for Disney.

This is real life taken from real life situations. What’s sad is that some people live in fantasy worlds where they teach young girls that the first man they meet will be their knight and shining armor just to later find out they were just the jump off.

    PS- its just an article

  6. Nia Nia says:

@ Kai – I don’t think the author is trying to condone being a “Jump-off” or “Wifey” but, the reality is this is a true situation for lots of us. We have women walking around (1) happy to be 1,2,3,or 4 (2) are placed in those tiers and not know! So, this article is based off the stupid email forward that I’m sure millions of us have received in the last couple of years. I thought it was funny, but sadly true! That’s why I love Clutch – you get all types of articles and I am definitely looking for Shantel’s next article….what about men that LIVE in the club! Write about that..lol

  7. Kai Kai says:

I’m sorry if it seems like I over-reacted or that I’m offended, but I stand by what I said. I’m not blaming/jumping the author (sorry if it seems that way) or saying that she is condoning the behavior. I do think it’s a little odd that she prides herself on being a wifey but maybe that’s because I’ve never heard that term spoken with any amount of respect.

Kelly – the rest of my comment was based on the tone of the email not an interpretation of the article. I understand that the article doesn’t mention sleeping with a lot of men, but the email does give off that vibe. And I agree, it is sad when little girls are raised to believe that some man will be a ‘knight in shining armor’.

  8. Tiffani Tiffani says:

I loved it! I thought the article was an eye opener. When a guy calls a girl his wifey its a term of endearment generally used among the young hip urban culture. Call me wifey!!

  9. Kesh Kesh says:

Love this article! Everything stated was nothing but the truth.
