Thanks for the love everybody. It's much appreciated.

NinaG: Can't deny progression. All of society's ills aren't fixed, but we, us, black folks gotta realize that we're not the only race besieged by inequities and injustices. Now that "one of our own" is holding down the top spot, nobody cares about our past anymore or how much racism is here. We gotta adjust and play. Can't spend the whole game calling out the refs.

This is definite truth:

"Not that Obama is the greatest man ever, but he represents the greatest symbol that aspiring black males has seen in a while. In fact, he represents the greatest symbol of any male right now."

I ponder though, how many of us will truly shape up, get our acts together, and act as if we want the change we've been given. Well written, good subject too.

I appreciate this piece and agree with you on some points, but some of the discussions about the impact that Obama's victory should/will have on black people is a bit frightening. This notion that because he has made it to the white house, black people don't have any excuses is, in the most simple term, wack. Both Barack and Michelle Obama's stories are inspirational but that doesn't change the fact that all of the "isms" (racism, homophobia, sexism, classism, etc.) are reality NOT excuses. I think people are stuck on this idea that black people think "I can't get a job because the white man is keeping me down." When in reality people, from varying class, gender, and racial backgrounds, are thinking: "I have a job where I am the only ______ and I am often uncomfortable" or "I've been admitted to college but I can't afford it; where are all the scholarships they told me would be available for people like me?"
From a personal perspective, I'm tired of "switching" my language or restricting myself in conversations, to meet certain standards at school or work. I often end up secluded and unhappy. We need to talk about how this can be limiting as far as education, or career attainment and advancement.

Well written. You said what I've been thinking since the election. You could almost write a book about accountability and excuses in the Obama age.
