The best advice I ever received from a friend is: "Don't listen to what other people say about you unless you ask for their opinion." People will always have a comment about your appearance. It's ridiculous and hilarious. When you're thin you're "too skinny" if you gain weight you're "getting fat". It's ridiculous. You can never make anyone else happy or find your happiness in other people.

I completely understand this point of view... but what about thin black women wanting to be thick, because that is a body type that is celebrated in many of our communities
Recently I've lost weight, it was not intentional but I had to deal with comments from family/friends suggesting that I had become less womanly, e.g, "you look like a child, you need to eat"
I've actually had a hard time accepting my current body type, more than when I was "thick"

I've always been a thin/slim growing up. Now that I'm almost (lawd no!) 30, my body is finally starting to fill out. I live alone and spend quite a bit of time amusing myself so looking at my new curves in the mirror was fun and seemed all natural to me until.... the comments came from family and friends that I'm getting FAT! Let me remind you, I was always a 0 or size 1 shopping in the juniors department. I'm now a women's 2/4 depending on the weather and how much I'm walking. I was appalled that people could really consider my healthy shape and size as FAT. My cholesterol is great and my overall health is intact. It's a shame that I ALMOST succumbed to their negative views of my body. You really have to block out the comments and unrealistic images the media throws at you. There are so many more things to concern your thoughts and time with other than weight and appearance. God bless!

man i understand the part about the co-worker...whhhhaaaatttt! I have one that makes me sick because she uses her body to get what she wants and do things like bend over on purpose and the way the guys act will briefly make you feel like shamu, but then you stop and think and say "I dont want that type of attention". Sure I want to lose a few pounds so that i can look great when im older instead of sick with some sort of chronic illness like diabetes, or hypertension. That is why I kind of smartened up because I realize that by not being active and a little more selective of foods I am actually hurting myself for the future when I will be reaping what I sow.

But it is also hard to shop in a world where a size 13 looks like a size 5 and your jeans dont fit right because your thighs are too big. When will the madness end???

P.S. I LOVE BEING THICK...i cant give up my collard green!

I totally agree with everythign you said. Women try so hard to become this image that the world thinks we should be and it's just not worth it. I've always been up and down with my weight for years. And now that I've turned 40 this year, I've realized that I've been doing the same thing. That's why my weight goes up and down every year because I keep trying to get back into my size 6 clothes I have in my closet. Now I do need to loose 40 pounds because It's too much weight on my 5'0 body frame. But the point is that I'm not running to gym 6 days a week now making myself workout and giving myself a certain time frame to loose all the weight. I go to the gym when I feel like it, I walk around my neighborhood when I don't go and I watch what I eat, but I'm not a fanatic about the whole thing. I look at myself in a whole new light now and it feels great.
