1. The key factor to maintaining natural hair is MOISTURE, MOISTURE, and MOISTURE! Curly or kinky hair tends to deflect light and appear dry. Locking in moisture will also help prevent frizz. Prep twists, knots, and braids with KeraCare Conditioning Cream. It imparts a healthy shine and won’t leave a greasy residue. If your are not daring and can’t bare the whole grow out phase cut of the old relaxed hair and usher in the natural new hair and the new you.
2. Growing out a relaxer requires special care since the point where the two textures meet is fragile.
3. Depending on texture, some of my favorite products are:
4. The best advice for finding a natural hair specialist is to do your homework! Research products and styles so that you already have an idea of what you want. Steer clear of heavy-handed stylists! Super tight is not always right (unless it’s for wash-board abs). When dealing with fragile or “virgin” hair, handle with care. No one salon is full proof, just be clear with your needs and desires when “interviewing” a new stylist.
Overall, the process of going natural requires patience and care. Don’t worry; it will all pay off in the end.

Great tip! I am completely natural after a few months of transitioning and I couldnt be happier :) My hair is growing very fast trust me it’s worth it! I love my big kinks.
Great article ladies! It’s right on time for me considering that I am going through the transition right now.
Informative article Clutch! I’ve transitioned twice and was completely lost the first time I attempted going natural. On my second round, I did my research about haircare and products. After just two months, I big chopped it and since then I haven’t turned back. I’ve been natural for 5 months now and loving every second of it. It was extremely refreshing to wet my hair each day and be on the go! And I wasn’t afraid of the rain anymore…you know how us black girls feel about the rain with perms! LOL. My favorite products are: Giovanni Tea-Tree Shampoo and Conditioner which make my curls pop; Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk and Hair Balm which adds lubrication and smells oh so good; Ecco Style Gel which holds my curls without weighing them down. I’ve written many posts about my hair journey on my blog that both educate and entertain folks. Take a read!
This is a great article. I chose to go natural by using weaves to transition. I was tired of relaxing and noticed that my hair was stronger and longer by stretching out my relaxers. However I still like to change it up, straight and long, curly and short, kinky and shoulder length. I love my options! My blog has tips on transitioning with a weave, its another option for those who are not ready or don’t want to do a big chop.
THANK you for this i am one month in to being a happy nappy! i transitioned by way of stocking cap weaves and a cute knitted cap…those days are good and gone.. i’ve gotten so many responses from everybody, some good some bad. people saying that i look like i’m on my “grown woman sh!t” and other -my daddy- saying i look like a lesbian. either way i’m happy knowing that my hair is healthy. i love seeing the SHOCK value face on my surrounding people and i love hearing their responses! if they have negative things to say I just say “didnt cut it for you”. I also love how QUICKLY this hair dries. i can shower. wash hair. and shave and be completely dry before i walk out the door! Now if i can fgure out how often i should wash my hair and find a GOOD lasting moisturizer then life would be extra fine and dandy!
