Perry donates $1 million to NAACP
he NAACP, the country’s oldest and largest civil rights organization, announced today that acclaimed film director Tyler Perry has donated one million dollars, marking the largest gift ever given by an individual entertainer. In addition, Perry purchased several NAACP commissioned Jacob Lawrence lithographs and additional lithographs by celebrated artists Jonathan Green, Elizabeth Catlett and Sam Gilliam. The gift, which will be distributed over the next four years, was made to commemorate the organization’s Centennial anniversary. (Continue Reading…)
Google explains offensive Michelle Obama image in results
Confronted with the return of an offensive image of First Lady Michelle Obama to the top of its image search engine, Google is now using some of its own ad space to offer an explanation on how its results are determined. Search Engine Land reported that Google first dealt with the image last week, when the company removed it saying that the Web site hosting the picture was a conduit for malware. But the image is back and ranking high, this time hosted in a different Web site. The fact that it hasn’t been taken down suggests that this time the Web site is not in violation of Google’s removal policies. (Continue Reading…)
Unemployment skyrockets for young African Americans
These days, 24-year-old Delonta Spriggs spends much of his time cooped up in his mother’s one-bedroom apartment in Southwest Washington, the TV blaring soap operas hour after hour, trying to stay out of the streets and out of trouble, held captive by the economy. As a young black man, Spriggs belongs to a group that has been hit much harder than any other by unemployment. Joblessness for 16-to-24-year-old black men has reached Great Depression proportions — 34.5 percent in October, more than three times the rate for the general U.S. population. (Continue Reading…)
