Tomorrow’s Leaders Star in ‘Harlem Heights’
Viewers might not recognize Brooke Crittendon, one of the eight African-American professionals starring on BET’s new reality series “Harlem Heights,” but they’ve probably heard of her ex-fiancé, rapper Kanye West. Crittendon, who works at MTV and is no stranger to the reality genre, said the reason she put her life in front of the camera has a lot to do with feeling misunderstood as a famous person’s other half. “Because I played the background to the person I was dating, I had to go through people saying things about me or assuming who I was,” Crittendon told TV writers here. “I just wanted to let people know who I am and what I really do. I’m not just this person’s girlfriend.” (Continue Reading…)
Legislature Swears in Kansas’ First Black Female Senator
Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau took her oath of office this afternoon looking both excited and nervous as she became the first African-American woman to serve in the Kansas Senate. “It’s kind of like a dream; it didn’t really sink in until now, until today, I mean wow,” she said. “To stand before the people and other senators and family and friends and say ‘I do’ was just an awesome, humbling feeling.” Faust-Goudeau, a Wichita Democrat, previously served in the House of Representatives. She won the seat previously occupied by Sen. Donald Betts, D-Wichita. (Continue Reading…)
‘Notorious’ Writer Responds to Lil’ Kim’s Accusations
The Queen Bee unleashed her venom on the team behind the Biggie biopic, “Notorious,” saying “most of the story is bullsh–” and complaining that the actress who played her in the film never even reached out to her. In a recent cover story with Hip-Hop Weekly, Kim — who said she has not seen the film — said she believed Big’s wife, Faith Evans, and his mother, Voletta Wallace, were behind the snub. Evans, however, denied that accusation, explaining to MTV News last week that the movie was adapted from the book, “Unbelievable: The Life, Death and Afterlife of the Notorious B.I.G.,” by Cheo Hedari Coker (although the film is actually an original story written by Coker and Reggie Rock Bythewood).
