Hip-Hop’s Cash Kings Still Rake in Millions
After attending the NBA Draft in June, Jay-Z threw a party at his 40/40 Club in midtown Manhattan, carousing into the wee hours of the morning with the likes of LeBron James and Spike Lee. Not bad for a guy who took a 57% pay cut this year. The Brooklyn-born rapper pulled in an estimated $35 million over the past 12 months, topping our annual list of Hip-Hop Cash Kings. It’s far from the $82 million he made last year, but more than enough to reclaim the crown from 2008′s monarch, 50 Cent. Rape Culture Condemned in South Africa
Dumisani Rebombo wasn’t circumcised, did chores considered girls’ work and was sick of being taunted for not being a man. So at age 15, he took the only course considered “manly” in his rural South African village: He raped a girl. Twenty years later he searched for the woman to beg her forgiveness — a rarity in a nation where a culture of sexual violence is deeply embedded in society. Rebombo agreed to share his story with The Associated Press on Thursday as researchers presented findings at a conference on sexual violence that show more than one in four South African men surveyed admitted to committing rape. Specter Wants Probe Into Club’s Rejection of Black Swimmers
The introductory voice mail for The Valley Club outside Philadelphia notes that “things are really starting to heat up here in July.” They weren’t kidding. The private club in Huntingdon Valley, Pa., is denying it practiced racism after coming under fire from parents, bloggers, even U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., because a group of black and Hispanic inner-city campers were asked not to come back to the pool even though the camp had paid membership dues through August.Valley Club president John Duesler Jr. initially released a statement claiming members were concerned “that a lot of kids would change the complexion” and atmosphere of the club.
