Wanting your skin to be darker = not self hate (no matter what race you are).

Wanting your skin to be lighter/brighter (especially when you are "black") = self-hate.

Why is this?

Unfortunately the majority of the Dominicans that I've dealt with have issues with being black. I'm half black Cuban and never understood this. We had this one friend that I'll call Julie who was Dominican. She was a hard working and responsible person, but she had this problem, she refuse to acknowledge her African heritage. She'd say that she's a direct descendant of European Jews and one day my mom sat her down and told her what time it was. Needless to say, Julie was displeased that my mom would tell her that she was forgetting to honor her African heritage. Julie acted insulted as if my mom called her the 'n' word. Hello, my mom's a black Cuban so there was nothing derogatory about her reminding Julie that she was black too. Dominicans seem to have creative ways of describing themselves, indio oscuro, indio claro, without calling themselves black. Cubans do it to some extent (Latinos do this in general to varying degrees), but we honor our African heritage more openly than Dominicans. I find this unfortunate because this takes away from the natural good looks and charm that you guys have.

I could've passed for something lighter than what I am because I'm yellow, but I'm proud of my African half. Why should I hide it like it's a shameful secret? Us black Latinos need to stop with the denial, placating, self hatred and internalized colonization that's still taking place. No matter how some Sosa defenders cut it, the man's ashamed of being Dominicano. Most Dominicanos are of African heritage even if they look like A-Rod, un mulato.

Sammy esta pasao and needs a head check. When he's done with that he needs to issue his people an apology because that's hella offensive. Maybe he don't need to say sorry and get on his knees, but offer a conciliatory statement that fosters goodwill. People eventually forgive and forget.

omg... @ cynthia. as i was reading your comments, I kept thinking WTF? i kinda understood where you were trying to go at first (i think), but your points were very invalid and quickly lost me. bottom line- what he did was reveal to the public that he was not happy being the (ultra fine) brownskin man that he was. he thought lighter was better. that message is not one that blacks are going to just accept, because i know for me -it's b.s., and i'm tired of the ignorant misconception. brownskin boys and girls who look up to him "for all the right reasons" aren't going to understand why he needed to change the color of his skin...

It's self period. I don't care if this was a white man seeking to make himself look like Morris Chestnut LOL would still be self hate not a black thing. Just don't see anything like that happening so not an issue to speak on.

i have read many posts on this pic of sammy sosa, and i find it sad that instead of telling the truth, he chooses to lie, and lie badly might i add... the skin cream is a bleaching cream, not a softening cream. you can tell because his eyelids and the skin around his lips are still the same color. people wit vitiligo lose all pigmentation in the skin. that goes for eyes, lips, etc. the contacts are not green, but hazel (it's not a trait in the "black" genepool). i have hazel eyes, but then again i'm mixed. i do find in the afro-latin world it is better to be lighter, and have longer and straighter hair, but shoot-i'm me, that's all i can be.

i find it sad that he loathes what he sees so much he would do this to his skin. he is now going to have problems with his skin. he just looks unnatural and ugly. including the relaxer... yea sammy we can tell.....

i don't have a problem with people who change their looks to look like someone else, even if it is a person of another race, but i have a problem with the lies to cover it up. lil kim said she wanted to be white, and now she is. at least she was honest about it...

i dunno... i just think it was a dummy move... with unhealthy life-threatening consequences...

Wow, didn't notice the green contacts until you pointed them out. His hair is even different too. :( I would never have recognized this to be Sammy Sosa
