Fashion 2.0: Zulema Griffin Releases Spring ’09 Collection via YouTube

Saturday Sep 20, 2008 – By Clutch

In an effort to both democratize Fashion Week and stay on the booming digital bandwagon, emerging womenswear designer ZULEMA has once again decided to nix the runway for the digital world (as she first did with her Fall ’08 presentation, “The Revolution Will Be Realized”). Her Spring ’09 Collection was delivered earlier this month through the web in the form of a concept film titled “Virtual Self,” making her show accessible to not only fashion insiders and industry members, but to the masses of fashion enthusiasts worldwide.

Zulema on her Spring ’09 collection…
The presentation is a visual critic of the African American feminine identity as well as self-realization in a technological world. “Virtual Self” explores a young, African American fashion designer struggling to find a balance between old traditions, religion, and racial bias, all in the hopes of discovering the truth and beauty that will create fashion immortality. Traditions that dominate African American culture echo throughout the conscious mind as the designer cathartically expends inner thoughts to make sense of the influx of jumbled concepts. The ultimate goal is to find out what is real in her pursuit of self-acceptance, and a global position in the fashion industry.
