Obama Open to Limited Legalization of Marijuana

Monday Nov 26, 2007 – By Clutch

061211_obama_vlrg_3awidec.jpgAUDUBON, IA – Obama can’t seem to escape the smoke of his youthful indiscretions wafting after him on the campaign trail. Just four days after he told a group of high school students that he had experimented with drugs in high school, Obama had to admit to it again at a town hall here.

When a voter asked Obama if he was for the legalization of medical marijuana, Obama said that he wasn’t in favor of legalization without scientific evidence and tight controls. Citing his mother who died from cancer young, Obama compared marijuana to morphine saying there was little difference between the two. “My attitude is if the science and the doctors suggest that the best palliative care and the way to relieve pain and suffering is medical marijuana then that’s something I’m open to because there’s no difference between that and morphine when it comes to just giving people relief from pain,” Obama said. “But I want to do it under strict guidelines. I want it prescribed in the same way that other painkillers or palliative drugs are prescribed.”

But he added that he was concerned that the reasons for the use of marijuana would grow and create a “slippery slope.” “I was feeling really tense, so I needed a joint,” Obama joked with the crowd of those who might try and undermine that type of system. The question was followed up by another voter asking him, “Unlike other presidents, did you inhale?”

“I did,” Obama said to loud applause and laughter. “It’s not something that I’m proud of. It was a mistake … But you know, I’m not going to. I never understood that line. The point was to inhale. That was the point.”

  1. Interesting how your whole life goes on debate to understand how you will perform in the future. Sometimes I think its silly. Just as rediculous to ask if you because you spend more than a half hour on the toliet one time, does this mean that you won’t make decisions in a quick manner? I’m stretching it, but bring up everything is has nothing to do with the job as president

you dont have to worry!, this racist will never be president! he is fake! and phoney and a hater!! that should be very clear by now, or maybe you need 20 more years to beleive it!!

  4. Jim Jim says:

And you’ll never hear any such questions from Hill-Billy’s campaign stops because her events are scripted with planted “concerned citizens” asking her cream-puff questions with her prepared answers all in teleprompters or Powerprint files ready to go.

Then again, she might not have teleprompters at her stops from now on because CLINTON CAMPAIGNS HAVE BEEN DEADBEATS AND OWES HUNDREDS OF SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS across from Iowa to New Hampshire….http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0308/9259.html

  5. I would hope that the President would be open minded enough to think of new strategies for the economy, health care, global warming and social care. Maybe this is the kind of person who would try marijuana? Is there overlap?

  6. Nanna Nanna says:

he’s great, and real, not stiff like everyone else!

  7. I don’t smoke! However, I feel the legalization of some drugs, like marijuana, will result in lesser incrimination of black men on petty counts of possession. Not to mention, the simple rule of if its legal would most likely result in the involvement of drugs less appealing. Our community has been destroyed by drugs, especially for brothers and sisters who aspire for greater things but are forced to hustle to make ends meet. This would be one humble step for a greater society. What kind of civilization do we have when an 1/8th of the population is behind bars. Doesn’t seem civil at all!

    - just a thought

If only they would scrutinize McCain the same way…they only do it to minorities and women. Let someone like Oprah get into office, and they’d say she was a super elitist and fabricate stories of her snubbing rich and poor people alike.

The Media = Modern-day Fairlytales and Fables that tend to end tragically.

  9. DeeDee DeeDee says:

Hey I think the man has a good point…medicinal Mary Jane helps alot of people who can’t tolerate the man made crap they make us swallow or inject every day. We need someone who has an open mind, and who is wlling to try new things. I don’t want 8 more years of Bush’s parasitic twin…I want a change. Hell we’re already in the pits of another depression.
I’ll even go as far to say that I am for the legalization of the stuff period. Yep I said, and f*ck those who want to impede on my freedoms. You have to smoke he equivalent of your body weight in marijuana to kill yourself, and it’s in the record books that NO ONE has ever died of an overdose. If you want to prove me wrong, find me a case. It’s a safe drug as long as you know where and when to use it. Why are we allowed to go to the bars and get so wasted we piss and puke ourselves? Whatever, I’m done with this…

  10. Erica Erica says:

I agree 100% with DeeDee! I say make legal period. I don’t smoke the stuff myself but I know folks that do on a damn near daily basis and they are fully functioning, working people. i have never heard of anyone overdose on marijuana or even getting sick from it. But with alcohol you can get really sick, kidney failure and what not. so why not make it legal. it’s not going anywhere so you might as well throw some tax on it and be done with it!!

and who the hell spit in “me” lemonade?

  11. NanaBaby NanaBaby says:

The bottom line here is that things only become legal when the big boys have control over it to make money off of the people. Marijuana is a plant, they can’t control you growing it even in your house, so it will remain illegal.

It has nothing to do with whether something can help we the people. Now if they can put it in a capsule and prescribe it, they will control that and make it legal, but any other form be illegal. Bottom line is do they control you and the money!
