Satan Worshipping Celebs? – Part III

Monday Nov 23, 2009 – By Sky Obercam

The Hova is under attack once again. This young pastor accuses Jay-Z of espousing anti-Christ-like messages on “Empire State of Mind.”

What did Jay-Z exactly have in mind when making such statements? Not to get all Sunday school on you Clutchettes and Gents, but didn’t Jesus say that “No one comes to the Father except through me”?

Food for thought most definitely… What say you on this matter?

I feel him I really do….he gave a good sermon and all that, he was passionate about what he was saying and I respect it but folks diss Jesus all the time. Folks diss God all the time everytime they disrespect another human being, judge another human being, harm another human being, deny another human being basic rights….that’s just my opinion though, also I’ve never really liked, liked, Jay-Z anyway don’t own any of his albums, back in the day Jigga man was off the hook but in my opinion lately he’s fallen off and none of his stuff really MOVES me, so I don’t think that him dissing Jesus in his song is that serious because really ‘who is Jay-Z’, perhaps to some weak minded people he’s the greatest and his word is law but there’s other artists I would rather spend my time listening to. The say the love of money is the root of all evil and in the world of celebrity you do have those who do what they do for the love of money but then again you have those who do what they do for the love of the art…it’s up to the individual to filter whose message they let in…..

  2. SheReads SheReads says:

Jay-Z may very well be a Satan worshiper (I personally don’t know and wouldn’t make a blind assumption) but in my opinion, this song (specifically the verse identified) does not display evidence of that one way or another. In fact, I would argue that it speaks to the contrary.

He implies that this “life,” in the sense of ‘the fast life’, begins to be cultivated the farther you step away from the church. Jesus can obviously save you if you are close to the church. But when you leave, as Jay-Z says, “when the church ends,” you fall prey to evil, sin, and inevitably, death. In this case, you have not called upon Jesus to save you from your sins, but rather, you have taken comfort in the pleasures of “the city,” or what the Bible would refer to as worldly joys.

It’s very easy for people to abandon their religious principles when faced with promises of fame, riches, lust, and simple pleasures… New York City has all of this to offer and more. A newbie, or anyone who isn’t grounded, will get sucked in so fast forgetting who brought them there in the first place – Jesus. But that’s just my opinion. This is art and it’s subject to interpretation.

  3. Leather Leather says:

I probably should watch these videos, but I think the thought of them is ridiculous. Jay-Z might not even subscribe to the same beliefs as Christians and if he says something that shows that they automatically call him a Satan Worshipper. I agree with Tae people diss Jesus all the time by their actions. If you are easily lured and tempted by songs, maybe secular music isn’t for you.

  4. MsBRG722 MsBRG722 says:

We really need have a basic discussion between literal and figurative. This gentleman may mean well but his sounds silly taking the lyrics so literally.

  5. Lish Lish says:

Oh give it a rest!…any one can be a satan worshiper…this needs to end..either you gonna listen to the music or not..how about we play a few of those gospel records backwards as well!

  6. des des says:

There are gospel records that have subliminal messages in them. Its in the music!

    • Lish Lish says:

I believe it because as history shows religion was also used to control people. Lets not be blind here.

  7. Kyle Kyle says:

This is what happens when a phrase is taken out of context. Listen to or reread the whole part referring to the girl:

Mommy took a bus trip, now she got her bust out
Everybody rides her, just like a bus route
Hail Mary to the city your a virgin
And Jesus can’t save you, life starts where the church end

He’s telling a story, one of many in New York. He’s putting you into the mindset of this women. A church grown women goes to New York, an unfamiliar city to her (Mommy took a bus trip; Hail Mary to the city your a virgin). The city ended up being to much for her and her dreams. She ended up being a prostitute (now she got her bust out; Everybody rides her, just like a bus route). So in her mindset, in her new life, she feels Jesus can’t save her (And Jesus can’t save you, life starts where the church end).

  8. Gifted Gifted says:

So I looked this video and just about 20 secs in I thought to myself what you’re saying sounds more like a crazy man ranting with out proper facts, you are going off a few lines in a song calling the man a Satan worshiper that’s just right out slander yet again with any facts. The point is did you call up the man and ask him about his song and to what he meant by these lines, this is music world and not everything is cut and dry as you put it.

  9. anonygrl anonygrl says:

i love the song “empire state of mind” and i noticed that line the first time i listened to the song. i don’t think jay-z is believes in god/jesus as savior and you know how i feel about that? SO WHAT! as a christian who was agnostic for quite a long time, i get SO TIRED of christians (not just black christians, but in general) acting as if anyone who doesn’t believe in Jesus is ultimately a demon spawn devil worshiper. i have many friends who are christian, and many who aren’t, and some of my agnostic/atheist friends are more forgiving and kind than my christian friends. imo the people who are the most holier-than-thou are often the most hypocritical.

    • Soul Cry Soul Cry says:

It’s 2009 and some are just as barbaric in there thinking, accusations, and self imposed supreriority. Fanatics. Expecting to believe that as a Christian you hold to rights to condemn and assume the path of another.

11th Century…invade the civilized Muslim world…five centuries of warfare to come. Muslim heads used as catipults. But why not, they are infidels…right?

14th Century…burning of the Jews. Black Death…world domination? In the name of…Christianity? The theory of ‘witch-craft’ develops. Death to all blasphemers or dabblers in the black arts. But what are the ‘black arts’? Did the Egyptians dabbled in the ‘black arts’? Vudu (or Voodoo, actually used as a form of protection)? Another topic for another day…

15th Century…continued mass hysteria of Jews “cohorts of the Devil and Anti Christ” – Dominican Vincente Ferrer. Almost one-third of the population is killed.

17th Century…burning of witches for Christ. Science (Galileo) and the Church are in conflict. Science suggests that space is never ending and that the sun and plants were not unique and do not revolve around earth…condemned to burn at the stake. How dare you question.

      18th Century…endorsement of slavery, racism, and subordination…

19th Century – Church continues to reject Science.

My point is ignorance, moral panic, and mass hysteria can have dire consequences. Centuries later, the witch hunts continue.

Having a different faith, questioning religion, etc does not make you a devil worshiper. Many of these mentioned believed they were doing it in the name of God, but in my eyes the devil is good at playing tricks.

I strongly believe that the Light is within us, blessed by the Most High. What would the Church do if you realized you had the power within and not within their four walls. That power would crumble. The power that they’ve been trying to hold onto for centuries.

Enter the age of Aquarius. lol now I sound like homeboy. LMAO I slay me.

    • a/n a/n says:

I’m a chirstian and i don’t beleive that ” acting as if anyone who doesn’t believe in Jesus is ultimately a demon spawn devil worshiper”.. I don’t kwo where you got this thinking from but i strongly disagree.. there are true existing Christians out here in the world who don’t judge people 1st off hand or believe that b/c another individual has another religion that they’re a devil worshiper. I honestly feel sorry for people who come across “so called christians” and they think they are holyer than anything”. Eveyone needs to wake up.. even Christians.. many of us are fast asleep and have no clue of influential society has on everyday people.. they’re decieving us left and write and it is only through Jesus Christ that we may know the truth.

  10. Clnmike Clnmike says:

And this is why you dont trust a preacher man cause 9 times out of 10 they dont have a clue and yet they want to tell you whats up. Completely misunderstood the lyrics, and from the sounds of it misunderstands his own teachings since your not supposed to put anyone over God including Jesus. Bottom line is that there is a population out there who believe that if you do not believe in Jesus as God than you are a devil worshiper, this would include most of the planet including Muslims and Jews. Exactly what is Clutch’s intent with this series?

    • anonygrl anonygrl says:

agree with you on everything, especially this:
Bottom line is that there is a population out there who believe that if you do not believe in Jesus as God than you are a devil worshiper, this would include most of the planet including Muslims and Jews.

i know a lot of christians who accept people of other religions but think that it’s the atheists/agnostics who are the definition of evil. they don’t believe in Jesus and they’re automatically devil worshipers, other religious types don’t and it’s ok. hypocrisy.

    • Soul Cry Soul Cry says:

Yet again, I agree with you.

  11. Ree Ree says:

Keep an OPEN MIND people and don’t just follow fashion because you THINK you know something, look a lil DEEPER and LISTEN to the lyrics and UNDERSTAND them.

and furthermore….watch a Jay-z interview or two and tell me what part you see any bullshit devil shit about his aura…..please kill it with a skillet, and stop being so naive.

Like you really don’t get it do you? WAKE UP!!! jeeeeeeeez lol

  12. Ms O Ms O says:

This shit is lame. If you are gonna interpret a line at least look at the whole song in context.

    Foolishness. Pure foolishness.

  13. Soul Cry Soul Cry says:

    Foolishness.

We can make anything mean what we want it to if we try hard enough. Like weaving a capturing tale using truths, half-truths, wives-tales, folklore, skepticism, and a vivid imagination…not to forget border like schizophrenia.

People to tend to be so skeptic that they become gullible; grasping for answers to questions.

What makes me laugh even more is that others feel they have the right to question anothers faith. Who do you think you are? Really.

  14. Donna Donna says:

It’s no question that Jay Z has a tendancy to speak ill of God rather metaphorically or play on words or what. It’s one of those things where what we say or do reflects on how much we value a person/thing. You don’t have a belief that Jesus is real than naturally you won’t have issue with saying something against Him or an untruth about Him. It’s something to be expected from someone that doesn’t believe in Him and is even outlined in the scriptures so Christians shouldn’t be shocked or appauled, that’s where grace is suppose to come in, the same grace that was given to us to be saved when we didn’t believe in Him and actually hated Him is the same grace that’ll be able to understand where Jay is coming from in this song, He’s not suppose to think Jesus can save you because He’s not one who has received salvation and probably not good examples from Christians that shows otherwise.

However more times than not, Pastor Cox is a dope teacher and on point, he dropped the ball with this one and I’m sure his motivation had more to do with his love for Christ hearing something untrue about Him, hopefully there will be a recant after he hears some of the responses.

And here are some other views from Christians that aren’t fully agreeing with what Pastor Cox’s stated here. Christians shouldn’t be grouped no more than we as black people in terms of how Pastor’s are or what Christians do etc.

I like your first paragraph. I am not a claimed Christian but my questions were endless…until I was able to be witness to His blessings. Well said.

  15. Donna Donna says:

Oh and the whole Satan worshipping thing is just embarassing quite frankly. It gives people who already have a bad impression of what it means to be a Christian a worse one. I’ve come across people that are both possessed and have stories of becoming Christians after reading the bible to refute Christianity as Satan worshippers and the Holy Spirit converting them. So at the end of the day doesn’t make a ton of sense to point out who worships the devil over the need to preach the gospel. Anyone who is redeemed by God will tell you themselves yo I use to be a devil worshipper but……there are people in church that are devil worshippers there are people in the gospel industry, devil worshippers so yeah it’s embarrassing and furthers the divide. People will naturally hate Christ nothing needs to add to this fact.

    • Soul Cry Soul Cry says:

Funny that you posted this and I just posted my response anongyrl… as it proves your point.

      Much agreed.

  16. Rachelle Rachelle says:

Doesn’t this whole Satan controversy come from the issue of Jay-Z being freemason or something?

  17. Ashley Sangster Ashley says:

Everyone doesn’t have to be a Christian. The man is an entertainer and that is what he is getting paid for. Nobody else is judged on their personal life anywhere else. When I go to work, my relationship with God isn’t an issue and neither should his. Leave people alone and let people live their own lives.

  18. Loquacious_ Loquacious_ says:

The preacher may have a point, but I can’t tell because he spends more time talking to the viewers about his disgust instead of explaining his argument. I would have appreciated what he was saying if he would have had a more structured argument. But, that is the problem with most preachers-they don’t think to take a public speacking class.

Tangentially related, if you are a Christian and you are offended, then don’t support Jay-Z. That means, do not buy his clothes, his fragrances and whatever else he is apart of or whatever else he owns.

But I will say this, it amazes me how Christians are expected to be tolerant of other people’s views and religions. On the other hand, folks can talk about Christianity like a dirty dog. And, if a Christian gets upset about something that is blasphemous, then he or she is out of pocket. Christians are called to tell others about the love of Jesus Christ. So, stop being offended when you find someone that does it (although this gentleman could do some more work on his pitch).

If you choose to live your life without knowing the love of God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, then good luck with that. I won’t be offended by it, I just won’t support you financially with my hard earned money.

  19. a/n a/n says:

“Doesn’t this whole Satan controversy come from the issue of Jay-Z being freemason or something?” Yes @ Rachelle.

have you checked out the Jay-Z deception? on YouTube.com
    or vigilantcitizen.com

It’s not just Jay Z.. its rihanna, beyonce lady gaga.. many people in high power are in seccret societies.. George Bush even Obama.. did yo knwo that Obama is a 33rd degere freemason? George washington was too… It’s alll over… people need to wake up.. don’t trust no man… deception is everywhere..
did anyone know that the white house was built (the structure of it and design) is based on freemasonary symbols…

    • Soul Cry Soul Cry says:

Freemason does not equal devil worshiper. It is not a religion and is not opposed to any religion. In fact, most Masons are church goers. It’s a secret society, no different then any other (ie sororities, frats, military, etc) most times giving that person special treatments or connections. Social settings and events.

There number one declaration is in a Supreme Being, for most that belief is God, Jah, Jahovah, Most High…what ever one chooses to call Him. Yes, they use codes and symbols. Big whoop…history of mankind is in stones, symbols, etc.

The misunderstanding and devil label came from the Roman Catholic Church (here we go again) because it opposed ORGANIZED religion, NOT the faith in God. They were deistic. Not willing to be subjected to the iron fist of the church.

The Devil-worshipping, baby-eating, goat-riding stories are just that; stories, products of a fevered imagination, typical agend bs.

    • a/n a/n says:

Thank you for the information SoulCry it is very valuable however, I never said on my post that Freemasonary is devil worshiping. I was responding toRachelles question that is why the question i’ve used in my post is in quotation marks.

I am beleiver/follower of Jesus Christ. As the bible states and it shows clearly in the posts by you all. John 3:19 says ‘And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.’

No judgement just staing what Jesus said in the scripture.

Also please research Free masonry it is a religion they worship G.A.O.U (great architect of the universe) Just because someone goes to “church” it dosen’t make them a follower/beleiver of Jesus Christ.

Placing Jay-Z on some petal stool is also called idolatry.

He said it! he meant it! there is no in between or trying to “guess” what was in his mind when he was writing the song.

Don’t hate Jesus because he dosen’t hate you! .

I also see him as imature for his age, this latest song – suggest more than that, words do speak presence of mind. I pray for his wife and I pray that he understands the truth that there is only one God.
