Venus and Serena Williams to Own NFL team
When you own one sport, why not try for another?
In the case of the wonder twins, Venus, and her younger sister, Serena, dreams have become a reality as the sisters are close to inking a deal to make them part-owners of the Miami Dolphins.
The Williams sisters, who dominate women’s tennis like nobody’s business, are extending their reach into men’s sports (and digging into their very deep purses to do it).
Why, you might ask?
Well, the sisters live in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., about an hour away from Dolphins headquarters. The Dolphins, one of the NFL’s, fabled franchises, have been trying to tap into the power of Miami and South Florida celebrities for a while now.
Even so, the Williams sisters will be just the latest celebrities, especially African-American celebrities, to attach their names to professional sports franchises recently.
Rapper Jay-Z is part-owner of the NBA’s New Jersey Nets, having paid some $4.5 million to get in with a group of investors’ $300 million offer in 2004. The deal, which calls for the Nets to relocate to Brooklyn, New York, was unanimously approved by the NBA’s Board of Governors.
In 2008, Atlanta recording artist Usher was approved to become part-owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The group of investors that Usher joined offered $375 million for the franchise and has benefited from the pop star appearing at Cavs functions including games.
Terms of the deal involving the Williams sisters will be announced next week. The sisters aren’t the only South Florida celebs to join in on the action. Musicians Gloria and Emilio Estefan and Marc Anthony also were included in the deal to purchase the Dolphins.
The Miami Dolphins in 2008 completed one of the best turnarounds in NFL history, winning 10 games and capturing the AFC East after going 1-15 the previous year.
The Dolphins were blown out in the first round of the playoffs though, losing to the Baltimore Ravens 27–9.
