NYFW Spring 2010 was monumental not only for the amazing designs showcased, but it also marked the last year at…

NYFW Spring 2010 was monumental not only for the amazing designs showcased, but it also marked the last year at Bryant Park for Mercedes-Benz Fashion week. At Bryant Park, the excitement of fashion was filled in the air, and the tents were packed to the Brim with fashions elite, designers, celebs, stylists, editors, journalists, retail buyers, models and photographers. The spring 2010 collections were fun, colorful, and edgy with a playful spirit.

A few of the major trends to look out for in the upcoming spring season are: Cutout shapes and slashes, mini bow accents, one shoulder dresses, tie and dye colors, splash paint colors, eyelets, lace and sheer materials. For your hair think light weight and low maintenance. A major trend for hair will be the Slick back look. With these pointers we are sure that our Clutch readers will be well equipped for spring.

Poodle Pusher was in attendance to view the latest spring collections from top designers, here are a few collections we loved:

Rachel Roy: This had to be one of our favorite collections; it was the perfect interpretation of the strong, bold and confident Rachel Roy woman fused with a sophisticated display of sex appeal. The show opened with pieces in a cool shade of grey and beige- a pantsuit, wrap dress and silk top that sizzled with a plunging neckline. The next section of the show was a burst of spring colors, in hues like turquoise, fuchsia, and fluorescent yellow that all worked magnificently together. Black was the closing color of choice in strong pieces like a cropped jacket, a wrap lace dress top and skirt and a one shoulder body suit with ruffles. Rachel Roy’s latest collection was absolutely astounding, and is one that appeals to all women!!!

Trend alert: one shoulder dresses, slick back hair, wrap.

Port 1961: Tia Cibani’s spring 2010 collection was titled Fluere. Sheer, silk and organza materials in subtle colors like lilac, baby blue, salmon, cream and soft peach colors were met on the runway with a splash of vibrant orange. The mood of the collection was relaxed with a confident elegance that gave a serene Japanese inspired touch with ballet flats, kimono styled dresses and Kabuki inspired belts.

Trend alert: One shoulder dresses, eyelets, tie and dye, slick back hair.

Monique Lhuillier Opted for a more intimate and smaller presentation outside of the tents this year, however her collection was grand in nature. Draped jersey gowns perfect for an award night were statuesque and breathtaking to gaze at, strong bold safari trench coats, along with bow, fringe and rope belt accents also added a unique touch to the collection.

Trend alert: One shoulder dresses, slick back hair, bows.

Nicole Miller: Her collection this season had a lot of edge and was indeed a representation of the rock and roll Nicole Miller girl. A bold take on traditional designs were seen as asymmetrical designs, one shoulder dresses and draping details were incorporated into the new collection to create modern architectural pieces.

Trend alert: One shoulder dresses, slick back hair, sheer.

Yigal Azrouël: With dark shades as accessories and popped collars on motorcycle jackets, the mood at Yigal Azrouel spring 2010 runway show was cool rocker chic!! Mesh details, cut out shapes and body conscious one shoulder dresses were key pieces that also coincide with the trends for the upcoming spring season.

Trend alert: One shoulder dresses, slick back hair, sheer, Cutout shapes and slashes

Alexander Wang: This was definitely one of the most talked about show of the season. Alexander Wang did something unconventional and abnormal from his usual black and white sexy look we’ve grown accustomed to seeing from him. He brought to the forefront a sporty, cool athletic girl with an added feminine chic. With inspirations from an all American football team it was amazing to see how he reinvented the idea of a traditional football uniform. The layering and use of different textures of leather and fabric was magnificent and re-inventive.

Trend alert: Cut-out shapes, one shoulder dresses, sporty.

We are thrilled to introduce our new partners in style, Chichi and Ogo the swanky sister duo behind the DC based image consultant firm Poodle Pusher. They’re like the inherently fly best friends who aren’t afraid to tell you when you’re not looking so haute and give you the tools required to go from drab to fab. With their keen sense of style and insider knowledge, Poodle Pusher will be our eyes and ears on the fashion scene delivering a dynamic dose of street style, how to’s, must see boutiques and so much more!

Ladies in Dark
The all black ensemble no longer needs to be feared; Versatility can come with this look and we believe it should be worn by everyone and not just on Halloween or to a funeral. Yes, color always adds to a look but there isn’t anything as sleek and fine lined as an ensemble in a rich black silk, satin, or cotton material. The key to this look is with finding what style works best for you and wearing it with confidence! Why let all the rock stars have all the fun on stage? We too can rock out, be BOLD and edgy with our wardrobe. There is a rock star in you just dying to hit that high note, so it high time you let it out. There are tons of ways to carry out this look- You could go rocker chic by pairing a leather jacket with studded accessories, which always works great for a night out on the town; or opt for something more romantic by pairing your ensemble with black lace or organza detailing- As the seasons roll along be sure to wear fabrics that reflect the climate change..

Trend Watch
We’ve always been cheerleaders of statement jewelry. These are the pieces that add the finishing touch to your wardrobe, OR the timeless gems that you just can’t live without. For the past few years we’ve all seen heavy 80’s retro chains and chunky statement necklaces adorned on the necks of our favorite fashionistas and not to mention making frequent appearances on the must have lists of every fashion magazine. Well in 2009 a new wave is coming, It’s the year of the Statement EARRINGS – Think Big, BOLD, chunky, colorful, and creative when choosing your eccentric pair. It’s imperative to remember that these pieces stand strong on their own so avoid making an accessory clutter by wearing too much at once. Every fashionista should master the fundamental mathematics to style; knowing where and when to add or subtract from any look.

While we are on the subject of mathematics; one of the oldest sciences familiar to man is the part of math concerned with questions of size, shape, and relative position of figures and with properties of space, known as Geometry. The focus placed on dimension, symmetry, pattern, lines and shapes is what makes the visual nature of geometry appealing, and allows for an easy transition between the Math and fashion world. We can now see today’s top fashion designers showcasing their understanding of Geometry and artistic expression of patterns with their latest 09’ collections and ad campaigns seen in Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Elle and the likes. For Poodle Pusher this fad should have come sooner, because as you may now know we are junkies addicted to the idea of mixing different clothing patterns and textures. The geometric print trend is a really great way to be adventurous with your look this year. Here are a few geometric designer looks that we loved this season!

Every once in a while the Fashion scene gets graced with a new riveting designer with raw talent. Top pick on our Designer watch list this year certainly has to be Aschobi Designs by Adama Kai. Coming back from our trip to Africa last December 2008, we really got acquainted with a lot of amazing designers whose inspiration and influence lie deep-rooted within the African culture. This strong association is evident in the collections by Aschobi Designs; here is our introduction…..

Bio: Adama Kargbo is a Sierra Leonean-American and a recent graduate of Parsons School of Design (Paris, France). She recently returned to Sierra Leone from New York City to launch her collection; ASCHOBI DESIGNS. It is a dualistic fashion company in post independence Africa catering to the fashion identity of the global man and woman living in Freetown or Paris. Her collection gives a modern twist to vintage 1960s African couture.

Tis’ the season that follows after the summer heat waves, the time has now come for fashionistas alike to wrap around in the warmth of fur coats, beautifully tailored jackets and 100% wool scarves. A Poodle Pusher lives and will scramble for “layers” like it’s our birth right, the good old saying less is more doesn’t apply during this time of the year. In fact we boycott anything small and lightweight, what’s this time we speak of, you’ve guessed it, Fall!!!!

There is a popular misconception floating out there that during the fall and winter months fashion and style should get replaced for sweatpants or baggy unflattering garments, pieces from previous seasons that no longer belong, or there is a lack of variety of clothes to wear during this time of the year? Such thoughts should no longer be condoned. The reality is that there are actually more fashionable pieces to play and mix with in your wardrobe; which brings us back to our obsession with layers!!! Not to worry we will explain why? To get started we wanted to spill the beans on a few trends we see as a huge hit and point out a few essential pieces that EVERY wardrobe should have this fall.

*Ruffed Up*
Worn in the “Elizabeth” days to demonstrate the status of a woman in society; ruffles are still holding strong as a fashion staple appealing to the modish desires of today’s woman. Not only has this historic trend grabbed attention in the fall/winter 09 runway fashion shows, it has been worn by fashionistas and celebrities alike and can also be seen interpreted in a variety of ways: ruffled collar shirts, sleeves, coats, skirts and dresses to name a few.

*Attention to Details*
Style is all in the details! From intricate patterns and stitches, to the choice of fabric or accessories paired; great fashion ensembles are always built as a result of paying attention to the fine points. Poodle Pusher’s philosophy when it comes to styling clients, runway shows, fashion shoots or ourselves — has always been just that. To elaborate we wanted to share with you amazing details that we have fallen madly in love with and ones we see being a huge hit across the board.

Feathers – Subtle feather details on shirts, dresses, skirts, hats, collars, and sleeves are always breathtakingly chic, as seen on the fall 2008-2009 runways. The key to this trend is to be worn with grace, elegance and simplicity: Stay clear of bright feather boas or ensembles that are overkill.

Boyfriend Denim – Don’t ask why his shirt and boxer briefs are so much more comfortable than ours? Maybe it’s the fit, or the mere face that it’s his. Whatever the reason is….We just can’t get enough of wearing them and now we can add his jeans to the list!!! The Boyfriend denim is the laid back, grungy or disheveled denim that pays homage to him. It’s the quintessential approach to looking feminine chic with a masculine edge; not to mention can be uber comfortable as well. To get this look, take an old pair of jeans with a baggy loose fit and cuff them. Another option will be to run a pair of scissors across them and cut them to shorts (also looks great when paired with leggings); don’t be scared about making a mistake because there is no such thing! Feel free to customize it according to your taste. Lastly, slash lines across the thigh or pocket area and add the finishing touches by washing them and putting it in the dryer to fray the lines.

Note: For an overall Fab look, pair with a button down shirt, sweater, Leather jacket, booties or pumps.

Super Hero – We all have our alter egos, the fearless and resilient version of us that emerges in a time of need with no inhibition, very much like our beloved comic book characters. Clark Kent had Superman; Peter Parker had Spider Man; and Diana had Wonder Woman. We all live by-curiously through these alpha characters because lets face it he/she typically has most of the fun and excitement and without a doubt makes a bolder fashion statement and holds the better wardrobe. Fashion is a direct product of our environment tied closely with our innate instincts and artistic expressions. So, it’s not a surprise that the world’s best-known designers are tapping into their alter egos to explore new avenues for their craft. Bold, sculpted and architectural silhouettes much like our comic characters costumes can be spotted in their latest collections. The art to wearing this look is in translating from couture to ready-to-wear fashions. Go for coats and jackets with a sculpted feel (padded shoulders, trapeze a-lines, belted and half sleeves) and match it up with jeans, trousers or leather pants to achieve this look.

Note: Celebs are getting in on the act too. Beyonce has unleashed “Sasha Fierce” and Rihanna’s latest tour ensemble could definitely be lifted straight from Cat woman’s wardrobe.

*Bag Lade*
In the case of your choice of bags, BIGGER is BETTER. We all know EVERY lady has to have her on- the-go makeup KIT and half our wardrobe in our bags. Right? Well now we have an excuse and answer to the tough question, why do you have all that junk in your bag? Answer- “I have to fill it up, or my bag looses shape and looks empty” Hey, we are getting closer. Seriously, big bags should be the rave for every woman! Adding a big bag to your look makes for a dramatic and BOLD style statement, and believe it or not, can give us a slimmer look, otherwise known as the “slimming effect” What more can a girl ask for! So not only are they stylish; they are also practical, versatile and serve as great storage for our cosmetics, books, brushes and other paraphernalia.

*Layer ME on*
We digressed for a good cause, but now let’s take focus on our obsession here. We can’t stress enough the Importance and beauty of layering. For us it’s the easiest trick in the book on how to be ready for any occasion, in essence a quick fix to the worries we all have of being underdressed or overdressed. Layering allows us to perfect the art of blending different textures, styles and clothing pieces while still being able to create a cohesive and stylish look. The purest form of self expression and Individual style will beyond doubt be achieved by putting this art to practice. Get into the obsession with us and add at least 2-3 layers per outfit than you normally would. Spice up your look by adding one of these: a long cardigan, scarf, sweater, leggings, hat, jeans, knits, blazer, jacket, snood, turtleneck, vest, oh and tunics or tanks left over from the summer make for great texture pieces …… You will find it to be an eye opener, the limits we place on our look by saying “That’s not me” or I can’t wear that” or “it won’t look good on me” without trying, is one of the main obstacles we all can face in the path to finding our personal style. Play around with what looks great on you, Try new ways to find out what looks great on you, get rid of your recycled looks, “out with the boring and in with the new” should be our motto. Tell us your results —- we are curious to find out?

Remember these Key words: Texture, Layer, Mix, and Cohesive
