R&B singer Alicia Keys is enjoying a successful worldwide tour, a chart-topping album and will act in an upcoming movie, but it might not have happened, she said, were it not for a near breakdown two years ago. Keys, whose current hits include “No One,” is in the middle of her “As I Am” tour. The new “As I Am” album debuted on record charts at No. 1 and has sold over 3 million copies. In October, she makes her film debut in “The Secret Life of Bees,” starring Queen Latifah and Jennifer Hudson. Hunger in Ethiopia Now Spreading to Adults
Like so many other victims of Ethiopia’s hunger crisis, Usheto Beriso weighs just half of what he should. He is always cold and swaddled in a blanket. His limbs are stick-thin. But Usheto is not the typical face of Ethiopia’s chronic food problems, the scrawny baby or the ailing toddler. At age 55, he is among a growing number of adults and older children — traditionally less-vulnerable groups — who have been stricken by severe hunger due to poor rains and recent crop failure in southern Ethiopia, health workers say. “To see adults in this condition, it’s a very serious situation,” Mieke Steenssens, a volunteer nurse with Doctors Without Borders, told The Associated Press as she registered the 5-foot-4 Usheto’s weight at just 73 pounds. Spike Lee on Eastwood Flap: ‘We’re Not on a Plantation’
Spike Lee has responded to Clint Eastwood telling him to “shut his face,” saying the “Dirty Harry” actor “sounds like an angry old man” and “we’re not on a plantation.” In an interview published on Friday, Eastwood told the “Do the Right Thing” director to “shut his face” and stop criticizing him about not including African-Americans in his 2006 Iwo Jima movies, “Flags of Our Fathers” and “Letters From Iwo Jima.” Lee responded: “First of all, the man is not my father and we’re not on a plantation either,” he told ABCNEWS.com. “He’s a great director.
