The film landed in theaters on Friday (January 16) and during the weekend raked in $21.5, proving to be more popular than expected beyond African American audiences, according to Chris Aronson, Senior VP at 20th Century Fox. “We crossed over, which speaks volumes about his impact as a cultural icon,” Aronson told the L.A. 4 Stabbed at After-Party
Police say four men were stabbed at a New York City nightclub advertising an after-party for the film premiere of “Notorious” about rapper Biggie Smalls. Police said Saturday a 21-year-old victim stabbed numerous times was in critical condition at Brookdale Hospital. Three others were stable. The Djumbala club is in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn. Police did not immediately release further information. While the party had been promoted as the “official” after-party, “Notorious” distributor, Fox Searchlight, said it was not related. Dwyane Wade’s Divorce Takes Ugly Turn
Heating up: Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade’s divorce from wife Siohvaughn, his high school sweetheart. In legal papers, she alleges he abandoned his children, committed adultery, and infected her with an unspecified sexually transmitted disease. She wants the names of ”all of his sexual partners” during their six-year marriage. Dwyane petitioned for the divorce last May in Cook County, Ill. They wed in Chicago on May 18, 2002. Dwyane’s Windy City attorney, James Pritikin, issued a statement: “These malicious allegations are absolutely false and we look forward to the opportunity to dispute them in court.” Dwyane turns 27 on Saturday. Blacks and Latinos Make Up 80% Stopped by NYPD
The NYPD is on pace to stop and question a record half a million citizens this year – about 80% of them black or Latino, a new report says. The Center for Constitutional Rights, citing NYPD data obtained in a suit, said the vast majority of those stopped and questioned in 2005 through June 2008 weren’t charged with any crime. In 2007, for instance, the last complete year of data, cops arrested only 5.8% of the 472,096 people they stopped (27,632). “The New York City Police Department continues to prey on African-American and Latino communities in New York City,” Vincent Warren, executive director of the Center for Constitutional Rights, said.
