Diallo Family Reflects on Eve of 10-Year Anniversary
It was a decade ago that we first heard the cries of pain over the death of Amadou Diallo, a 23-year-old immigrant from Guinea, West Africa who was killed by police in a hail of 41 bullets. Diallo’s body was riddled by 19 of those bullets as he stood in his building doorway. His cousin remembers hearing the shots around midnight on February 4, 1999. Police asked him to identify Diallo’s photo and body. “He tell me, ‘You know this guy here?’ When I see that, it was Amadou’s ID. I said, ‘Did this guy get killed?’ He said, ‘Yes,'” said Mamadou Diallo. Killed by undercover officers Kenneth Boss, Edward McMellon, Richard Murphy and Sean Carroll, they were a part of the now-dismantled NYPD street crime unit. The officers said they were looking for a rapist when they saw Diallo and thought he was reaching for a gun. He only had his wallet and his keys. (Continue Reading…)

Octuplets Mom Not Getting Showered with Gifts
Where is the unlimited supply of diapers, formula and baby wipes? The free van? The brand-new house? Women who give birth to six, seven or eight babies are often showered with dazzling gifts from big corporations, local businesses and strangers. Nadya Suleman, 33, has been lambasted by talk-show hosts, fertility experts, even her own mother, who has her hands full taking care of Suleman’s other children, ages 2 to 7. (Continue Reading…)

Beanie Babies Maker Renames Sasha, Malia Dolls
The company that makes the popular Beanie Babies is retiring the names “Marvelous Malia” and “Sweet Sasha” from its Ty Girlz collection — and first lady Michelle Obama is pleased. The dolls have been renamed “Marvelous Mariah” and “Sweet Sydney,” Chief Executive Ty Warner of Oak Brook-based Ty Inc. said in a statement Tuesday. The original names were inspired by what Warner called “this historic time in our nation’s history,” but he said the dolls were not intended to bear the likeness of President Barack Obama’s daughters. The switch is in deference to the first family after Michelle Obama said using her daughters’ names was inappropriate, Warner said. Profits from sales of the original dolls will be donated to charity. “We appreciate the company’s response to this matter,” Michelle Obama’s press secretary, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, said Tuesday.
