A prominent South Carolina Republican killed his Facebook page Sunday after being caught likening the First Lady to an escaped gorilla. Commenting on a report posted to Facebook about a gorilla escape at a zoo in Columbia, S.C., Friday, longtime GOP activist Rusty DePass wrote, “I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors – probably harmless.” Busted by South Carolina political blogger Will Folks on his FITNEWS blog, DePass told WIS-TV in Columbia, “I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone. The comment was clearly in jest.” Then he added, “The comment was hers, not mine,” claiming Michelle Obama made a recent remark about humans descending from apes. Disney’s First Black Princess Raises as Many Questions as It Answers
In what has been a whirlwind week of coverage, Black Voices has been quoted in the New York Times as well as in a segment on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric regarding the newest Disney movie, “The Princess and The Frog” which presents the animated studio’s first African American princess, Tiana. Black Voices has proudly been on this story since 2006, before there was even a movie to speak of. Back then, the community boards were abuzz and this mother of a young girl who never saw herself reflected in all the plethora of Disney princess memorabilia wanted to know when, in fact, we were going to get an African American princess. Redemption: Kobe Leads Lakers to 15th NBA Title
The Los Angeles Lakers have won their 15th championship, beating the Orlando Magic 99-86 in Game 5 of the NBA finals. Kobe Bryant scored 30 points Sunday night in winning his fourth title, the first without Shaquille O’Neal. It was the 10th championship for coach Phil Jackson, moving him past Boston’s Red Auerbach for the most all-time. The Lakers took control with a 16-0 run in the second quarter and rolled to their first title since 2002. Pau Gasol added 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Lakers. (Continue Reading…)
