Alvin Ailey’s legacy has been kept
Reporting from New York – Judith Jamison can recall vividly the April 1989 lunch in St. Louis when Alvin Ailey designated her his artistic heir. “He said, ‘I’m not doing well; you know I’m sick, and I’d like you to take over the company.’ I said, ‘Sure, of course, Alvin.’ “That was it. The decision to do it was instantaneous.” Jamison, 66, was speaking last month in her comfortable office on an upper floor of the company’s sleek, spacious Midtown headquarters. The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater recently had completed its annual five-week New York City season, during which Jamison’s 20th anniversary as artistic director was honored and celebrated in various forms. Farrakhan predicts ‘white right’ trouble for Obama
Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan, boasting his divine stature, on Sunday predicted trouble ahead for President Barack Obama and urged him to do more to improve the lives of blacks and the downtrodden. The 76-year-old leader said the “white right” was conspiring to make Obama a one-term president, and pointed to his stalled efforts to introduce health care legislation as proof. He said those opponents and lobbyists were trapping him into a future war with Iran that could lead to mass destruction. “The word ‘prophet’ is too cheap a word. Alcohol use lower among African Americans
African Americans have lower drinking rates than other racial groups, according to a new survey from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. It found that blacks ages 18 and older use alcohol at a rate of 44.3% compared with the national average of 55.2% Moreover, blacks ages 18 to 25 are much less likely than other young adults to engage in binge drinking — 25.3% compared with 41.6% in the general population.
