“The Makobmo massacre is one of the worst ever committed by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in its bloody 23-year history, yet it has gone unreported for months,” according to senior Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch, Anneke Van Woundenberg. Late last year, the rebel group murdered over 300 civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo and abducted over 200 more. According to CNN and Human Rights Watch, most of those killed were adult men, but at least 13 women and 23 children are among the dead, in addition to a 3-year-old girl who was burned to death. The U.N. Security Council has planned to visit Congo next month to discuss the peacekeeping force’s plans for withdrawal and the protection of civilians.

Although the LRA, led by a self-proclaimed mystic and prophet Joseph Kony struck again, the Congo government says the LRA are no longer a problem according to an 80-year old Congolese man whose son was killed during the massacre. The heartbroken father says, “We have been forgotten. It’s as if we don’t exist. I beg of you, please talk to others about what has happened to us.”

The group’s efforts are aimed at replacing Uganda’s government, led by President Yoweri Museveni, with a democracy based on the Bible’s Ten Commandments. In 2005, the LRA was pushed out of Uganda, the group now takes action in remote bordered areas between southern Sudan, Congo, and Central African Republic. Recent reports reveal that the LRA are denying involvement.

Please create awareness of this terrible tragedy by further educating yourself and spreading the word.
