After Fantasia Barino earned her GED, she accepted an honorary degree and walked with graduates in cap and gown at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina on Saturday.
The 25-year-old singer attended the high school as a youth before dropping out after a being raped and harassed by a classmate.
In 2005, Fantasia published a memoir Life Is Not a Fairy Tale revealing she was functionally illiterate and was unable to read to her daughter or the terms of her ‘American Idol’ contract. In 2006, the New York Times bestselling memoir was adapted into a biopic for Lifetime Television, which the singer starred in playing herself.
Fantasia’s VH1 reality show ‘Fantasia For Real’ showed the singer studying rigorously for a GED exam, meeting with tutors and happily reading to her nine-year-old daughter.
Fantasia’s new single ‘Bittersweet’ is now available on iTunes. Her third album, not yet titled will be in stores July 13.
