Alice Tan Ridley–the mother of Oscar-nominated star Gabby Sidibe–has been singing in the New York subways for 20 years. But on Wednesday, the 58-year-old soul singer took her vocals above ground. The singer performed to a cheering crowd on the popular NBC show ‘America’s Got Talent’ belting out Etta James’ classic hit “At Last.” The judges sang her praises and sent Alice to the show’s Vegas competition.

Alice says, “My daughter is a big star, but I’m still pursuing my dream, which is to become a great singer.”

Gabby’s mom is hoping for a big break and we hope she gets it. In the meantime, we’re headed to the trains for a lunch-time listen! Go Alice!

    Well done!

It’s never too late for anyone to pursue their desires.

I’ll be rooting for Ms. Ridley and it’d be wonderful to see someone’s (who can really sing) dreams come true — as opposed to the undeserved insta-stardom attained by several pop tarts with little real talent since the beginning of the millennium.

  • she was great.. and it didnt even matter who mother she was….

  • Oh man that made me tear up a bit! :D she is really good.
