Celebreality network VH1 gears up for their “Divas” concert this year. And this time, the franchise show has a military theme. The network joins USO presenting a night of entertainment while honoring our troops. Nicki Minaj and Keri Hilson join Katy Perry, Sugarland, Paramore and Grace Potter in a WWII style pin-up promo for VH1’s eighth stab at bringing the world’s biggest divas on one stage. The ladies will perform at the MCAS Mirmar and at military bases throughout the Middle East.

The army-theme is timely and heartfelt. But are Keri Hilson, Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry really divas?

Black Voices’ Karu F. Daniels says, “VH1’s “Divas” franchise is a far cry of that it used to be- when iconic behemoths like Whitney Houston, Cher, Shania Twain, Mariah Carey and Aretha Franklin held royal court at one of New York City’s great concert halls.”

A far cry indeed. I pity youth watchers today who have no concept of what a true singing diva looks like. Beyonce can’t do it all by herself—evidence of her absence from the line-up. Rihanna? Well, umm . . . *blank stare.* To include vocal powerhouses like Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and Fantasia even would tragically upstage this crew of pin-up poptart “divas.”

Remember the heydey of VH1’s “Divas”? I wasn’t the only one dancing with a hairbrush (ahem, my mic) in front of the TV to iconic performance by Whitney Houston and Chaka Khan. Or even when Mariah Carey accompanied Diana Ross on stage.

Now that’s the VH1 “Divas” I remember. Has the network become entirely diluted, even it’s most stellar show?

VH1’s “Divas” concert airs December 5, 2010 at 9pm ET/PT.

You be the judge! Is this lineup deserving of the “Divas” stage? Sound off!

  • I stopped watching after the first DIVA’S, because nothing could have topped it. Pop stars aren’t Diva’s but Diva’s can be pop stars. It’s watered down and lame to me now. I’m from a different era I suppose. Nonetheless I say let the kiddies have their shine. They only live once, but I won’t be watching.

None of the ladies chosen should be on the program. I heard someone call this installment Divas Light because all of the ladies combined equal to 1 1/2 Divas on a good day. LOL

Calling Keri, Nicki, and Katy Perry Divas in comparison to the original Divas & what the original VH1 Divas show was intended to be is a joke. Sadly the music industry is purely image and talent isn’t important or required. Keri Hilson is a great songwriter but her vocals need a lot of work, but she is a ladder rung or three above Rihanna and that isn’t saying much. Sugarland, Paramore & Grace Potter can all actually sing quite well. I’m passionate about music and I’m really fed up with the mainstream garbage that is put out and I’m more saddened that people are so willing to pay for and embrace pure ca-ca.
