The low-register R&B singer, Toni Braxton, revealed to over 600 women and celebrities on Tuesday afternoon that she has been diagnosed with Lupus, an autoimmune disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack healthy cells.
She delivered the announcement at the 8th Annual Lupus Bag Ladies Luncheon, where she was originally scheduled to receive the Humanitarian Award that was given by the organization.
“Take a look, this is what Lupus looks like,” Braxton said.
The singer also revealed more thoughts on her decision to share the news through Twitter.
“Had a great time. . . . A big moment for me. It was a tough decision to come out about it. But it was such a relief!”
Lupus is not the only issue that has been troubling Braxton. Recent reports have noted that she was diagnosed in 2008 with pericarditis, an inflammation of the heart lining that leaves her at risk for high blood pressure and heat palpitations.
She also had a benign tumor removed from her breast after her appearance on “Dancing with the Stars.” The singer has also been struggling financially—she recently filed bankruptcy for the second time, claiming she was unable to pay more than $50 million in bills.
