A teenager shot and killed a 7-year-old boy who his mother had been babysitting before killing himself this past Saturday.
19-year-old Vonn Gibbons Jr. was at his mother’s home in Macon, Georgia, where she was caring for the young boy named Jalen Griffin. Gibbons shot Griffin in the head around 12:20 am that Saturday morning, and then turned the gun to his chest and shot himself.
It’s just a sad situation,” Bibb County Coroner, Leon Jones, told the Macon Telegraph, calling it a tragic and difficult case.
Gibbons mother, Cheryl Cole, told police that she didn’t know that her son had a gun in the house. She was sleeping and didn’t hear the gunshots that morning.
Investigators are working to uncover Gibbons’s motive, but so far the reason behind the shooting remains a mystery.
“I spoke to both of the victims’ mothers and nobody knows why this happened,” Jones said.
Reportedly, Gibbons and the young boy were close friends and played together. Gibbons attended Macon State College, where he maintained good grades in his courses.
