Remember Ja Rule? The man who brought us hits from artists such as Ashanti and Jennifer Lopez could be headed to a New York City courtroom this week to stand trial for a gun possession case stemming from 2007.
Back in July of 2007, police claim they found a semiautomatic gun in Ja Rule’s luxury Maybach during a speeding stop as he was leaving a concert at the Beacon Theater in Manhattan. The chauffeured Benz also had a suspended registration and no insurance (on a Maybach? Really Ja?).
Ja Rule’s lawyer contends that the traffic stop was unjustified and claims that DNA analysis of the gun was mishandled.
According to The Washington Post, police assert they stopped Ja Rule after “they smelled marijuana and found a .40-caliber semiautomatic gun in the rear driver’s side door. He wasn’t charged with drug possession, and a judge threw out the rapper’s statement to police that he had ‘a little bit of weed’ in his pocket.”
Coincidently, Lil Wayne was also nabbed the same night, leaving the same concert, and ended up pleading guilty to gun possession. After admitting he had a loaded, semiautomatic .40-caliber gun (apparently, the gun de jour), Lil Way served eight months in NYC’s infamous Rikers Island jail.
If convicted on the gun possession, Ja Rule, whose real name is Jeffrey Atkins, could face up to four years in prison.
