Well, it’s settled…VH1 is trying to compete with BET for Black viewers (take that how you want it). The network’s latest edition to their reality show line up is “Beverly Hills Fabulous” which focuses on celebrity hair stylist Elgin Charles and his upscale salon.
Peep VH1’s description of the show:
“VH1 is making an appointment at the exclusively swanky and ritzy Elgin Charles Salon, which is the only African-American beauty salon located in the heart of Beverly Hills. Featured in VH1’s newest series, Beverly Hills Fabulous, the Elgin Charles Salon, owned and managed by the one and only Elgin Charles, is a magnet for a who’s who of high profile clientele. The self-proclaimed “Emperor of Hair” will stop at nothing to globalize his hair empire and secure “Elgin Charles” as a household name. However, viewers will get to see the only thing crazier than the demanding clients are the stylists themselves. VH1’s Beverly Hills Fabulous will be sure to righteously entertain as the cameras go behind the scenes of the Elgin Charles Salon following his quest to create his hair empire, hitting the Beverly Hills boutiques and restaurants with his crew, all while living as glamorously as their clients.”
To be clear, Elgin Charles is a force to be reckoned with in the beauty industry and has styled everyone from Star Jones to Vivica Fox, and was even once married to Jackée Harry (seriously), So it is a little odd that his salon (and the cast of characters who work in it) look completely crazy, and dare I say, extremely stereotypical.
Although I hope the show has more to it than reinforcing negative stenotypes about Black women (being loud, foul-mouthed) and gay men (always ready for a cat fight), the preview VH1 just released does little to showcase this.
“Beverly Hills Fabulous” is set to premiere March 14.
