Another one for the WTF files.
The Sun is reporting that a 23-year-old mother of two is the world’s youngest grandmother. And while this story is troubling on so many levels, I’d be lying if I didn’t say I breathed a sigh of relief when I found out she wasn’t black (Why? Peep ‘The Black Box’).
After fleeing Romania at 11 because of an arranged marriage, Rifca Stanescu—who is a Gypsy—ran away to marry her 13-year-old childhood sweetheart, Lonel. She soon gave birth to her daughter, Maria, at the tender age of 12.
Although Rifca Stanescu, now 25, urged her daughter not to follow in her footsteps, Maria repeated her parents’ pattern and ran away to marry her boyfriend when she was just 10. Maria, now 11, gave birth to a son just six months later.
Despite the fact that marrying and having babies young is a common practice in her culture, Stanescu says she wanted something different for her young daughter. “I am happy to be a grandmother but wished more for Maria.”
But it looks like the tradition will continue. According to the young granny, Maria’s son, Ion—now two—is already engaged to an eight-year-old girl.
Lord help them.
