Rihanna’s appearance on Chelsea Handler aired last night, although it was taped earlier in the week while the singer is on tour in Australia.

Rihanna looked flawless while the two laughed it up, discussing Rihanna’s birthday party and her stay in Australia. The two mused about the beauty of Australia, and even got into a little discussion about race.

When Handler asked Rihanna what she thought about the lack of black people in Australia, RiRi said she needed a minute to collect her thoughts. But she soon got it together:

“Everytime I’m on stage and I see someone black, it’s like you notice it. It’s such a thing to notice because, I mean, it’s really rare to see black people here. I know it has a lot to do with the history of this country, but it really is extraordinary to see one. One of us. And they’re usually really, really dark, which is beautiful, but you only see that here.”

Although some felt a little twinge of colorism when the clip of Rihanna’s Chelsea Handler appearance first leaked, I think it’s clear that although the singer may have not explained herself or seeing Australian aborigines very eloquently, she has no issue with darker-hued sisters.

I am also West Indian like Rihanna, and I am of a slightly darker complexion than she is, and ALL my life I have been called “the white girl” or similar names. Many west indians are darker in nature, so simply being a lighter-shaded black person will garner you the nickname of “white girl” or “white boy” or “yellow.” In assuming that Rihanna “lied” about being called a white girl, it’s obvious that you know nothing about West Indian culture. And so what if she wants to identify more with a white culture? I swear, some people are far to sensitive about race.

um… well, for starters, she’s not White?

I’m really shocked by the lack of knowledge most commenters have about Australia. Indigenous Australians are referred to as ‘black’ in Australia. There are only a handful of Africans in Australia.

Instead of leaping to the conclusion that Rihanna is preaching colorism, why is it so hard to believe that she is talking about indigenous Australians? Many Aborigines are very dark skinned. Others are not because of intermarriage with white Europeans.

It’s sad to see that people simply want to project their insecurities on Rihanna.
