An Orange County Republican Party official is facing calls for her resignation following her latest flub.
Marilyn Davenport, who is an elected member of the Orange County Republican central committee sent out an e-mail this past Friday with an image President Obama’s face superimposed on a chimpanzee with the words:
“Now you know why — No birth certificate!”
Apparently, Davenport thought the email was all in harmless fun because when she was contacted by OC Weekly, she asked:
“You’re not going to make a big deal about this are you?”
Davenport said the email was “just an internet joke” and dismissed notions that she would resign over the backlash, saying:
“I’m sorry if my email offended anyone, I simply found it amusing regarding the character of Obama and all the questions surrounding his origin of birth. In no way did I even consider the fact he’s half black when I sent out the email. In fact, the thought never entered my mind until one or two other people tried to make this about race. We all know a double standard applies regarding this president. I received plenty of emails about George Bush that I didn’t particularly like, yet there was no ‘cry’ in the media about them.”
Davenport, a Tea Party activist, has come under fire from GOP supporters have called for her to step down. Michael Schroeder, former chairman of the California GOP Party condemned Davenport actions saying:
“I have never seen anything like this before from an elected official. She has disgraced herself and needs to resign.”
It’s unbelievable that Davenport could not see how this email would be taken offensively, birther rumors or not. But on the other hand it’s good to see that her fellow GOPers are condemning her actions as well.
